Oh, hello. Allow me to introduce myself? I'm the humble creature krtr. Some facts about me? But of course. I'm seventeen, female. My hair is 70% curl and 30% frizz. I voluntarily left my country and I have one hundred and forty three days before I return to my home. I am displaced but thriving. I'm in a special time in my life, that is, I am enjoying my first big love. I hate to write but am only pleased once I have written. I have undergone a lifetime of growth in six months and survived, but it isn't as impressive a feat as it sounds. I am typically happy despite of my growing list of concerns. I've been writing since childhood, though my improvements only really began in leaps and bounds in recent years. I love to write fiction, either historical or what could vaguely be described as fantasy. I hate saying I write fantasy because people immediately assume, Oh, kings, dragons, warlocks, quests and stuff, right? Right, when it couldn't be farther from the truth. My current works include a book that the idea seems stupid now, but I'm already in so I must continue!! I'm also starting a two part series called The Coattail King and The Turncoat Prince, respectively. It's my pet project that will probably never see the light of day. It's main purpose is to express my own thoughts and beliefs and as such it's very private and I'm quite scared to tell any facts about it. Of course there is also my fanfiction which I work on from time to time... it's highly unimportant. It's only my go-to 'write for the sake of writing' outlet when I'm stuck in my other works. I hope to offer help as well as receive it and to make many friends among those on the forum krtr :*
Welcome to Writing Forums, ktr! I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing. This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work. However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing. Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills. If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself and Cogito) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. Hi and welcome to the Forums! Hope you enjoy this site as much as I do. So what is your fantasy story about?
Thanks for the welcome, everyone one I personally define fantasy as anything set up in an alternate world that doesn't play by reality's rules. In the book mentioned in the OP, the story focuses in on religious issues while maintaining a fantasy-esque plot. There are no quests, however, and mention of kings/princes/rogues is basically nonexistent. Rather it focuses on man's dominion over that world's gods, that world's connection to our own, etc.
^^ Sounds like an awesome story! Interesting twist, what with mrn controlling the gods. It's interesting how people's opinions on the genres differ, though, isn't it? For instance, I agree with your definition of fantasy, but I would add something to it: magic. To me, for a story to be a fantasy, magic has to be an explanation for at least one aspect. That's what separates fantasy from science fiction. As an example, a story that focuses on nymphs and fairies would generally be considered a fantasy, right? I mean, we don't see the creatures flying around in "normal" life, do we? So the only explanation given for their being in the story is magic. Science fiction can also star nymphs and fairies--but it would need an explanation for how they came to be. (It could be a disease or something...ha. The title of the book could be titled Fairy Fever. )
I suppose magic is more or less a key element. In the story I mentioned there is a ritual, but it's more spiritual and less magical. But if you squint your eyes and tilt your head, what's the difference anyway? I try not to use 'It's Magic' as a reason for something. It has to balance out. On an unrelated note... I want to read Fairy Fever now.
