    Hey

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Venea Taur, Feb 12, 2012.

Well, I've never actually done one of these intro things on a forum, but I thought I'd give it a little go here. Like most people on this forum, I've been writing fiction my entire life, or what constitutes an entire life for a twenty-something. My writing's developed to a new stage in the past few years and I've started experimenting with different forms and styles. I do have a couple novels in the works, but here I'm more likely to post short story stuff that I don't intend to do anything with. By this time next year, I hope to being working towards an MA in writing or MFA, whichever school accepts me.

Welcome to Writing Forums, Venea Taur!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself and Cogito) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

One of the novels is a coming of age type story for twenty-somethings. The working tagline I've given it is that it's about a young woman on a quest to forget, but finds herself forgotten. I've got about 86 pages done, which is about half way through. The other is a hybrid novel based on my bachelor's thesis and deals with social anxiety and depression. This one is much harder to work on because of the time and effort that is involved in warping a text to create the desired experience for the reader. Most of my work strives to create an experience for the reader because I believe writing isn't about putting words on a page. The page is my canvas and the words my paint to create an unforgettable experience for the reader.

That's great; 86 pages must already feel like quite an accomplishment. I've got 1 chapter complete on the novel I'm working about a young man on a quest to find his father.

I know what you mean about how it can feel like painting when you are writing; I feel this way too when I'm really passionate about what I'm writing about. It has been an interesting few steps presenting some of my "paintings" to people who edit and critque alot. I sometimes humorously see myself as that kid in kindergarden who just loves all the colours in the crayon box, who wants to pound and scribble all the colours on the page in a fit of ecstasy, and realizes the scribbles and pounds are a bit confusing to others.

Anyway, good luck on your thesis; there are a lot of helpful people and resources here which might help you on your way.

    Hi Venea,

I wish you well with the novels. The one with the woman being forgotten seems interesting. Something that may have a karma moral to it. I'm liable to get anxious and depressed myself if I read your other one so, I think I'll leave that on the shelf.

    Cheers
