NOTHING! Because who can stand to read and write at the same time?!

    Help me kill this Nazi!

Discussion in 'Research' started by Gravy, Mar 9, 2021.

I have been writing this collection of short historical/fanfic pieces and one of the characters ended up being a Nazi who participated in the Holocaust and now I need to have the Allies shoot this bastard. And I want it to be painful. Where is the worst place to get shot that can kill you? (Multiple shots are OKAY. I just want him to have a LONG time to think about his life choices and how ashamed his mother would be before he dies.)

I have heard rumors about the stomach, but I would like some more input. Or, if you have another way that could also work, please let me know.

    This character has to die.

They load him into an abandoned circus cannon and fire him over the Rhine. (I find this funny)
Or maybe they feed him to a bunch of dogs from a Jewish ghetto. (I find this sadistically possible.)
I guess they could blow his legs off and he could lay their screaming. That could go on a while. All the meat blew off but the bones are still there. That would be awful. (and sadistically possible again)
Then he hoists himself up and tries to run (funny) and then he's eaten by dogs. (and we've come full circle, except for the cannon)

Anyway. I don't think a bullet does him justice. I wouldn't ever want to be shot, but there's worse ways to go. Just a knife to the gut and you'll have to suffer through severe blood poisoning. It would last a long time. (Or maybe they flay the flesh from his feet and then the dogs chase him. There's another!)

I have developed a spider-friendly four-step plan to killing nazis painfully.
Step 1) Wrap nazi in razor wire.
Step 2) Put nazi on the bottom of a large wine barrel.
Step 3) Lower a hose down said barrel.
Step 4) Turn on the tap.

Or if bullets are truly a requirement, then probably kneecap him on both sides. With a big enough shotgun you can blow off the lower portion of the legs. The arteries naturally contract due to such trauma, but this only limits the bleeding for about half an hour iirc... Apparently the arterial contraction is particularly painful.

I don't think you'd get him to consider himself the bad guy though, as many with such an extremist position are basically anima possessed. Plus getting tortured to death will probably seem different from his perspective.

Yeah. That would be great, but he's not an officer of interest. He's just one of the randos in the concentration camp (I don't know which one, honestly.) who was given tasks. He doesn't try to whine that he had nothing to do with it, thankfully. I find those bastards the worst.

I like all of these creative ideas, but I really just see the whole camp is disarray as the allies are storming it. So, I can see where being stabbed might work. How does that blood poisoning work? Is it like the same as if you accidentally give the wrong blood type in a transfusion? Or different? And yeah, a bullet is just too kind for this asshole.

I could kneecap him- I think it would be interesting to have both his legs blown off by a shotgun. But I don't know what allies attacked and what their weapons were. I could do some more research into this. I also don't think I want the story to go on for too long, or I would have him taken poisoner.

And yeah, this guy has no remorse, which is part of the story. So he's not going to be self-reflecting on this.

I also liked your idea about the razor wire, but I need this to be more realistic and less-time consuming. Can I save this for later, though?

When does this take place? While there were plenty of summary execution of SS soldiers, that was mainly because of how they treated P.O.W. (refused to take prisoners in many instances). What I'm trying to say is, right when the Allies rolled in and liberated some of the concentration camps they may not have instantly known everything about the Holocaust but I'm assuming your timeline accounts for this somehow.

Yeah, in the short story, the allies are just freeing what they think are a bunch of people at this point. They don't know about the Holocaust, yet.

YES. All those bones breaking make me happy. Maybe, to add insult to injury, the tank runs him half-over and parks.

What about if he gets an apparently non-fatal wound and escapes to hide out in the forest, only to slowly die from gangrene caused by the wound? That could take some time, and he'd probably realise he was dying some time before it happened.

Point of note there wasn't much fighting when concentration camps were liberated... by and large the nazi's didnt hang about to face the advancing allies they retreated before they arrived, in some cases force marching the inmates away with them (google Death Marches for some idea of the scale of this), while in others they were abandoned as the captors retreated.. so your idea of the camp being 'stormed' and it all being chaos and fighting doesn't really work. Where guards were still present they tended to surrender without a fight because the guard force were no match for advancing combat troops (being there to keep the inmates in, not to withstand attack from without.)

In terms of who the camps were liberated by Bergen Belsen was liberated by the British (one of my great uncles was part of that force but he never discussed it), Auschwitz and its associated camps were liberated by the Red army, and the Buchenwald complex was liberated by the americans, although control of that camp had been seized by the prisoners underground to prevent atrocities by the retreating guards

It would be highly unlikely that either British or American troops would have the freedom or ill discipline to creatively kill any nazi's captured in these liberations... although there were a number of summary executions of SS men they were mostly done away from the camps and quickly with a bullet to the head... by and large the most common approach for the western allies was to hand SS prisoners over to the Russians.

The Russians absolutely did engage in atrocities of their own on captured axis forces... garroting with barbed wire was common, along with nailing to trees, burning, and castration.. but this would be less likely to be motivated by what had been done to jews (bearing in mind that the russians were busy sending soviet jews to the gulag... for that kind of motivation it might be more credible if he was involved in the mistreatment of slavic prisoners)

I think you have to decide if you want to make this melodrama or something more realistic. If it's all "Oh noes, NAZIS BAD!!" then you've got a mustache-twirling villain with no humanity, and it's tie Nell to the tracks melodrama.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn spent time in Soviet Gulags (equivalent of the Nazi concentration camps) and afterward wrote a book about the experience that helped topple the Soviet regime, in which he made this famous statement:

“The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either – but right through every human heart…even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained."

The biggest lesson revealed throughout the book (and other similar ones) is that not all the guards were sadistic or evil, many were trapped in a bad situation where they had to decide whether they were going to be inside the cells or guarding them from the outside. Neither choice is good. But in a situation like that, there sometimes is no other choice. Think long and hard, which would you choose? And can you really fault people for choosing to torment rather than be tormented and probably killed?

And for the ultimate example of that read up about the sonderkommando... jews who were forced as slaves to help the nazi's gas other jews https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-42144186 notable quote from Marcel Najari a Greek Jew and a member of the sonderkommando at Auschwitz

"Often I thought of going in with the others, to put an end to this. But always revenge prevented me doing so. I wanted and want to live, to avenge the death of Dad, Mum and my dear little sister,"

Similar to what @Xoic said, you may want to consider a different angle for this death. I'd consider something still dramatic, but maybe poetic. Like maybe throughout the book this guy would ramble about the superiority of his people, and denigrate others, discussing the mythical creature known as a Golem saying "Even their monsters are silly. Who makes a monster out of mud or clay?". Then maybe he ends up drowning in mud, or covered by clay and accidentally gets sent into an incinerator, etc.

Do you want the body to be found? If not then wrap up alive in barbed wire very tightly and throw into a deep river.

50 million people plus died in WW2, including most who were caught up in something that was not of their making. Ugly, arbitrary and beyond horror for the most part. Writing about it, you have the luxury to make your character's death carry pathos or some kind of meaning. Which was denied to millions who did not choose war.

The scenario that occurred to me was the circumstance where your Nazi disguises himself in a prisoner's attire, maybe even applying a tattoo, surrenders to allied forces, believes himself saved until he realises the soldiers are his former colleagues, also in disguise, who must now eliminate this Jewish survivor who threatens their own escape.

Depends on the tone you're looking for really.

A bullet to the pelvis could shatter everything, leaving him helpless for three days in agony and delierium until his perforated, infected bowels do him in.

I think this is the best solution to the problem stated by the OP. Do you have hospital experience?

I join the others in stating that you really can't hate someone just because they were a Nazi. Some people were forced to enlist. People remember that Corrie Ten Boom rescued Jews, but they forget that she also helped smuggle out unwilling soldiers so that they didn't have to fight for Germany. And then she took their uniforms and used them to rescue Jewish babies. Also, there's John Rabe, a political Nazi that lived in China and helped protect the Chinese from abuse by the Japanese army. The Nazis really were Socialists, and Rabe seemed to have taken this to heart: "Yes indeed— We are soldiers of labor; We are a government of workers, We are friends of the working man, We do not leave workers-—the poor-— in the lurch when times are hard!" As a result, he did all he could to try and create a safe zone for civilians and protect them from the murder and rape they faced every day. Kinda hard to believe a guy who went so far out of his way for the Chinese would bother hating Jews.

    (link for source: https://www.facinghistory.org/nanjing-atrocities/atrocities/question-morality-john-rabe)

Anyway, good luck with the story.

Some of my Ukrainian family who fought in the Red Army claim to have routinely done this to captured Germans. Nowadays, they're apparently in the habit of doing much the same to Russians. :meh:
