    Name for a Fantasy Race

Discussion in 'Fantasy' started by Egrin, Oct 11, 2018.

    Hello creative people,

I am currently developing a fantasy roleplaying game and I want one of the playable races to be
a race of fox people. Basically looking like foxes, but walking on two legs like humans.
I have no idea what the name of this race could be. Any suggestions? Ideas? Any help is welcome!
Here is an example of what they might look like:

    Thanks in advance!

    Regards, Egrin

Latin or greek names for things works well for making fantasy versions of them, so how about Vulpen? Vulpene?

Foxkin I mean, Foxkind? Foxfolk? Depending on the setting, you could use a cultural reference. Kitsune are the obvious one as the most well known and established fox-based sapients in any mythos, although they aren't describes precisely like that, that sort of thing is easy to hand-wave as creative adaption, especially in a fantasy setting rather than otherworld(although it wouldn't make much difference).
Perhaps they have a name in their own language or ethnic dialect like Parshin or something, whatever, and then an english-language name used by humans like Russets or something. Easy opportunity to establish the impact of social and ethnic division with something like that if you are interested, and it would work even if there's no particular conflict or discrimination. Or you could do one of those on their own?

Vulpene does sound kind of cool. I'll keep that one in mind, thanks!

I had thought about something like Foxkind before, but I think I want a more exotic sounding name. I think I had seen images of Kitsune before but I wasn't aware of that name. Thank you for that reference, that just opened up a whole new world of inspiration. I assume the words names Parshin and Russets were just completely made up?

Russet is a reference to red fur. As a good possibly-derogatory-slang-name.

Ah, gotcha. I didn't realize that Russet is actually a color, english is not my first language. I am not yet sure about their relations to the other races but the idea of a kind of discriminatory term that i.e. humans call them is something I will definitely keep in mind.

I see the first reply is the one I thought of instantly. “Vulpine” is an obvious choice. Frankly choosing anything else would seem strange without good reason.
