Word for pushing someone up by their feet

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Sennett, Jan 3, 2017.

    Hello there,

My question is: What do you call it when you help someone for example reach for something by letting them place their foot in your hands and pushing them upwards? I can't find the word for it.

    "Gimmie a boost!"

    That's the word, 'boost'.

Thank you. English is not my native language and I couldn't figure out the term in mine, so I'd have never guessed it.

If somebody asked me for a boost I'd say their hair looked pretty.

Or maybe not, maybe walking down the road...and an American said 'hey buddy, give me a boost,' well, certainly I'd frown, scratch about a moment, then comprehend probably: 'oh I see, absolutely, you would like a leg up over into that private property. Let me help you, sir.'

Also we have Boost chocolate bars [or once did], and also booster seats for under 21s to sit in vehicles.

    ...

I would write it out - gripped his plimsoles, levered the fellow high, up and over the fence..

oo, thanks for the memory, it's engendered a footnote for this thread. Granted it's more about pushing up daisies than feet. In my time, I've by chance spotted and sat by the gravestone of Samuel Plimsoll. A friend's dad occupied a nearby spot (plot) and while friend paid respects to his pa I wandered about a bit. Got an education I didn't expect, regarding shipping. I wanted to be mischievous and draw a line round the the epitaph but drew the line at acting on it.

Yeah, I did a google for the spelling - goes both ways, thank god. Plimsolls in my drawstring bag, Barrowby Infants.

This is the one I would say as well.

Maybe ask a cheerleader/gymnast? They probably have a specific term for it.
