Hello there. Just joined so thought I'd do the decent thing and introduce myself. These boards look really cool and I'm hoping I'll be able to get some valuable feedback on my work. Up to now I only have my friends to ask for feedback but I can never work out if when they say they like it they're just being kind. My mum's not the best for feedback either as she never seems to understand anything I write... or maybe she's simply right and my work doesn't make any sense. Well I guess these boards will help me find out.
Hi Myers, Welcome to the Writing Forums. Posting your own work should not be the very first thing you do here. It is really worthwhile to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog. If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate. As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize reviewing as a critical writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information. And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites. Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
At least your mother bothers to read your work And yep, you've come to a good place for feedback. Welcome to the forum.
Thanks for the welcomes. I've been having a good scan around the boards and really like what I've seen up to now. For a while I've not had much inspiration to write. I left uni over a year ago and was really happy to have some time to finally write what I wanted to. I managed to write 12 chapters of a novel I'd had in my head for a long time but after a few months I got hit with writers block. Since then I've found it hard to get back in to writing. Plus I've began working full time and any free times has been taken up with friends, pubs, clubs and Indian meals. But finding this site seems to have given my writing a second wind. I feel I have something here that will motivate me to write again.
Hey there! Just wanted to drop in, say welcome to the site, and I know how you feel! My own writing took a bit of a backseat before I started getting involved here. One thing that really helped me (and is awesome fun) is the RPG section of the forums! It'll give you some great experience in character development, creativity and brainstorming, and checking out some styles and genres you've never tried before! Come drop by and say hi if you get a minute.
