    Salutations.

    Salutations from Calliope!

I've been here for a very little while. I joined right in the middle of my exams and I've been busy since so I haven't been all that active. I'm just getting around to making a 'proper' introduction. :p

I have been writing all my life. Nothing I have done is "professional", unless you count the school newspaper, since most of my work is for my own amusement and occasionally that of others.

While I do enjoy writing my real passion is reading. I will read almost anything except for romance novels and teen fiction. So if you have any suggestions by all means PM me; I'm constantly running out of good books.

Aside from these things I am an avid runner and swimmer and I play the violin and draw in my spare time. These are only a few of the many hobbies I have picked up however those are the bigger ones though and I do not want to going into an entire list. I get bored easily so I have made it a hobby to pick up random hobbies...moving on haha.

I am a college student tackling a history major/psychology minor with plans to go into education and law. All that fancy stuff just means I'm going to teach for a few years before going off to study international business law.

My biggest writing pet-peeve is when people fail to capitalize their "I"s. As much as I love poetry I have resigned myself to the fact that I will just never BE a poet and i'm okay with that. I love psychology and seeing what makes people tick so most of my writing reflects this in some way.

My writing downfalls are Grammar and run-on sentences. I tend to write how I talk and I talk fast and often string many ideas together until it all just starts to blur together into a giant incoherent jumble. So if I'm not careful my sentences start to do the same thing.

I am generally a very open person so if you ever have any questions regarding my work, or myself, feel free to talk to me.

    ~*~
    Best wishes.
    Calliope.

Hello Calliope, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own writing for people to comment on should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!

    Welcome! Great intro.

Do you have a special place in time or country that you study, in regards to the history major? I have been studying Chinese history a lot. Comes with the whole living in that country for a year and learning the language bit, ha!

Argh, of course one would slip by me after I've said that haha.

I actually like to study Asian history as well. I also love the ancient Greek/Roman/Egyptian cultures and the medieval periods of Europe right up until American was discovered. If I study anything about the world wars or anything more contemporary I prefer to look at the social aspects of the countries involved during that time more so than the actual battles taking place.
