    Hi there! New member here.

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Steve Ladd, May 16, 2019.

Hey there, folks. I'm a longtime reading enthusiast who's been writing(on and off) for about a decade now, and who also happened to become a self-published author recently; my favorite genre is the Alternate History/Counterfactual/Uchronian(or anything else one prefers to call it) genre, though I've been a fan of sci-fi and fantasy for a long time(especially the former, as I was introduced to Star Wars at a very young age. Of course, I'm also aware that Alternate History also first gained recognition as a subgenre of sci-fi), as well.

I mainly joined because I wanted to be part of the community here, but also because I thought this would also be a good place to get some helpful tips on improving my writing as well; to be quite honest, I think I could really use the help(I'd like to think I'm a decent writer, but I honestly think I really gotta work on some areas).

Anyway, glad to be here, and I think I'll definitely enjoy my time here, for sure.

Hey, Steve! Welcome to the forum. I'm sure, with your list of preferences, that you will find many people here who share your interests, both in writing and in reading. But what the heck is Uchronian? That's a new one on me.

I'm old enough to have been in my mid 20s when the first Star Wars movie was released ...and I loved it. I saw it 7 times in the cinema—I think it was in the summer of 1974! I love more serious Sci-Fi as well, although my preferred writing and reading 'genre' is historical. I'll happily go backwards or forwards. I'm just not quite so fond of the here-and-now. :) That must say something about me, eh?

Anyway, good to see you here, and look forward to your posts. I see Iain has linked you to the Rules and the New Member Start Guide, so you should be off and running in no time.

I haven’t read any alternate history, but it sounds really interesting. I think you’ll find that many of us here love sci-fi, myself included. Enjoy your time here.

    Hello Steve Ladd !

My name is Arariel, and I am new too!

Like yourself, I have a particular fondness for alternative history. Sci-fi and fantasy are two of my most favourite subjects! (However, I am more of a Trekkie than a Star Wars fan, but I do consider myself a Star Wars fan all nonetheless!)

I hope you enjoy it here!

    Arariel.

Hi, Iain, and thanks a bunch for the welcome & helpful tips. :D

    Thanks, Cave Troll.

Hi there, Jannert, and thanks for the welcome. "Uchronian", btw, seems to be kind of an obscure term nowadays, but IIRC, it used to be a fairly common alternative to "alternate history" and I believe it's derived from a Greek word, or words, meaning "without time", last I checked.

Also, hopefully I'm not being too pedantic for my own good here, but didn't the first Star Wars movie, Episode IV: A New Hope, come out in 1977?

Anyway, though, can't wait to see more of the site! Hopefully I'll find a good place to get started making impressions soon.....:)

    Thanks, Zombie Among Us.

Hi, Arariel! Always liked Star Trek, too, to be honest, even if I never did get into it quite as deeply as I did Star Wars when younger.....

Ooh, to be really pedantic, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope didn't come out until 1981. Prior to that (and you were right about 1977 being the release date) it was simply Star Wars with no episode number or subtitle.

There's even an argument that the original Star Wars is a lost film, as it was first released on home media in 1982 under the "New Hope" title, and there were several revisions made between the versions.

Believe it or not, I'm not a Star Wars nutter, it's the historical aspect that interests me.

But pedantic is fine in my book :)

I've got the date wrong. Sorry. It was a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away. :)
