    Hello Everyone

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by cinnim0ngirl, Sep 7, 2009.

Hi my name is Kristi. I have posted a few times already but haven't really spoken with anyone yet aside from one or two people.

I am obsessed with music. Type O Negative, Pantera, Carcass, Tool...to name a few. I am a fan of Horror and a sucker for romantic comedy as much as I hate to admit it. I am painfully shy but extremely mouthy when I feel I need to be. I don't lie. The truth sucks some but it's better to hear that then be misled. I firmly believe that there is a right and wrong way to say something, knowing that we all (including myself) say things that can be mean. I try to be aware of everything I say and the effects it could have. If I hurt anyones feelings I don't mean to and will apologize if it is brought to my attention.

I have one novel finished and 4 others started. Two are children/Young adult. One is Fantasy /Horror with a dash of Romance, the last is actually my favorite. It's from a man's perspective after a nasty breakup. Thats what I am working on at the moment. It was a strange thing to never even consider writing, then all of sudden I get all these ideas at once. I felt like a ping pong ball not quite sure where to go.

I have never taken any writing classes and I have horrible spelling, punctuation and grammar, so to all who are OCD about about it I apologize in advance :) When I started to write everyone around me gave me grief. I heard, "Don't even bother to waste your time." or my favorite, "Seriously, you want to be a writer? HAHAHA!" But I finished my first one and I am proud of it. I didn't write it for anyone but myself and love how it turned out. I would like it to be published but I didn't realize how hard it is.

I moved back to Ca in January because my Uncle was put on Hospice. He was only 34 and he and my aunt have 6 kids, so I came back to help. I would sit up with him at night so my Aunt could sleep. He knew he was dying and had wanted to say things to everyone so my first actual writing assignment was a request by him to write his eulogy. We made it light hearted and inappropriately funny. I read it at his funeral last month and surprised everyone because no one knew we did that, everyone laughed when they were supposed to...thank god. Nothing like cracking a joke at a funeral and having 200 people glare at you.

Anyway, wow this is probably way too long so I'll stop here. I am pretty open if you want to know anything feel free to ask.

Welcome! I like Tool and A Perfect Circle. Don't listen to them as much as I used to but I am always in a mood for Schism.:)[/I]

Welcome. :) Sound like you have a lot of work ahead of you getting those novels edited. Good job on getting them finished. :D

I don't expect to finish all of them, would be amazing if I could. It took me over a period of 4 years to finish the one I did. I just got my first proof read back and it was a red ink bloody mess lol so another eidt...yay! I look at people like Steven King and Dean Koontz and wonder how the F do they do all that when one is driving me crazy. But I imagine they have people who do that part for them. Yay to be famous eh?

I don't know how much they let others do. I do know that if you do get published you should expect changes from the editors at the publishing house as well. Editing is never done, there is just a point when you have to realize that is as good as you are able to make everything and move on. But, it takes FOREVER to get to that point. If it helps, it is supposed to take about an average of 2 years to write a novel. Not entirely sure that includes the edit or not, though. Something to think about.

It wasn't a constant 4 years so yes It did help to hear that :) if I time line it it was probably 16 months maybe?

Of course laziness, irritation and lack of inspiration took up the remaining 2 yrs and 4 months lol..all part of the process I am learning. :)

Hello Kristi, Welcome to the Writing Forums.

Posting your own work should not be among the very first things you do here. It is worth taking the time to see what other people have done to improve their writing, and see if some of it applies to your writing as well. That is part of why we require members to review other members' work before posting their own for review. On the other hand, there are no restrictions, other than content and copyright rules, on showcasing your work in your member blog.

Also, be aware that posting a piece of writing on any public site, including this one, will greatly diminish your chances of selling it for publication. Removing the writing later does not alter that fact - once posted, it is irreversibly considered published. So do not post anything more than a small excerpt of any piece you are planning to submit for publication.

If you haven't explored the site yet, you should probably do so soon. Newcomers often gravitate to the Lounge, the Word Games, or the Review Room, but there is much more to be discovered if you poke in the corners. Remember to check out our FAQ as well, and be sure to read through the forum rules, too, to avoid any misunderstandings or hurt feelings. Respect for one another is our principal mandate.

As for the Review Room, new joiners often wonder why we do things a bit differently on this site than on other writing sites. We emphasize constructive critique as a vital writing skill. Training your eye by reviewing other people's work helps you improve your own writing even before you present it for others to see. Therefore, we ask members to review other people's writing before posting work of their own. The Review Room forums on this site, therefore, are true workshops, not just a bulletin board for displaying your work (and on that note, please only post each item for review in one Review Room forum). Also, please use the same thread for all revisions and additional excerpts from the same piece of writing. See this post, Why Write Reviews Before Posting My Work? for more information.

And while you're looking around, don't forget to check out our Weekly Short Story Contest and Weekly Poetry Contest. They actually run more than one week apiece, but any member may enter, and all members are urged to vote for their favorites.

Enjoy your stay here, and have fun!
