    Historical Fiction Markets?

Discussion in 'Traditional Publishing' started by TheProcrastinator, Oct 8, 2020.

    Dear Forum,

Please welcome my fresh face into your hall! Apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to put this thread.

For a brief intro, I am an amateur writer who, during a break from my normal (very hectic) career am looking to, maybe, just maybe, break in to the wide world of short fiction. I have range of genre interests and potential ideas, but what seems to have taken me at the moment is the historical setting, particularly ancient Rome.

I have recently completed and sent out a historical semi-horror set in Roman Britain that I am very pleased with, but have found it difficult to work out where to pitch it. First I sent it to Clarkesworld (as I'd heard about their excellent turn-around times): it seemed as though it was 'under review' for a long time but was eventually rejected. I have now changed tack and sent it out simultaneously to several fantasy / horror / non-specialist magazines and am waiting to hear back.

My question, going forward, is whether any of you wise souls know of any short story markets that are either dedicated to, or very much lean towards, the historical genre? I know it is generally less popular than, for instance, fantasy or sci-fi (both of which I love as well), but there must be a market out there?

Anyway, sorry for the monologue and hopefully I'll to get to know some of you as I mope around the forum!

    J
