    Fictional characters writing about fishing

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by WritaBurst, Jan 31, 2012.

    Hi all,

I am thinking about starting a blog about a passion of mine, fishing. I'm interested in two kinds of fishing, fly fishing and bait fishing. Instead of writing the blog from my own perspective, I've thought about creating two fictional fisherman and writing it from their perspective instead. One would be an avid fly fisherman and the other specializing in baits and lures. However, they would still be discussing real-life fishing. I plan to explain this idea in the "About" section of my blog.

I am still unsure about this idea and I would like to hear your opinions about this concept. Could it work or is it a bad idea?

    Thanks!

I like it. It's a creative way of conveying real-world information without being dry and boring. Give it a try and see how it turn out?

You could write a fictional blog about a writer writing a blog about a fictional character writing about fishing, and see how people respond to it...

I have this weird app that runs in my head that diagrams sentences as I read them.

You just blew it's fuse. I hope you're happy.

I definitely like it. As Fuhringer said, it helps prevent it from being dry and boring. I think it's a really creative way to approach it and I'm sure it'll turn out great.

Cog...I think you've just inspired me to do a bit of story-within-the-story writing. Thank you for that.

Yeah...I have a feeling Cogito was being sarcastic.

I really don't see the logic of creating a fictional character to talk about real world fishing. Honestly I can't imagine who'd want to read that. Are you going to "make up" fishing experiences and stuff too?

Just write it from your point of view and make it interesting.

If I wanted information about fishing (which is presumably the point of the blog), then I'd want it from a real person, not from a fictional character.

Yes I see what you're saying.
I wasn't sure what Cogito meant.
I was just thinking that it would make it more interesting instead of coming from me. But what you have explained is why I was unsure of doing it.

It sounds practically like a Socratic dialog. It's a tried-and-tested technique. Yes, it could work.

Am I the only one who totally gets where you're going with this? But make it a novel about a person writing a fictional blog about a writer writing a blog about fictional characters writing about fishing. Then you've got yourself the next Orchid Thief - sort of... :D
