    What Hobbies Have you Had?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by OmniTense, Nov 16, 2019.

I'm curious. I was wondering what hobbies we've all had over the course of our lives so far. So list them out. They can be sports, languages you've learned, instruments you play, etc.

I was an empiricist as a kid. I thought the point of life was to experience as much as possible. An innocent thought for a kid, but it eventually led me into trouble and I see now it was a dangerous belief. That said, it led me into a lot of hobbies. I should stress with over-emphasis that I am in no way, proficient, talented or even kind of good at most of my hobbies. I'll post mine later.

Anyway, it's good to have hobbies if you're a writer. The more experiences, the more genuine you can make life seem. At least, that's my take.

Once again, I stress that I'm probably only decent at about five of these. Writing and Reading are two of those.

*sips glass of dandelion wine and winces* And one of them is not wine-making...yet.

But all of them are things that I have tried for at least a year or more.

I consider my strongest asset to be my creativity, yet I'm too thinly spread. Writing is a mainstay, true, but I've drifted from pursuit to pursuit over the years. I just need to create...

    Not including reading and writing:

    Stop motion
    Coding
    Video editing/production (short films, etc)
    Wood carving
    Wilderness skills/bushcraft/camping
    Botany
    Guitar
    3D/2d/pixel animation and art
    Clay sculpture
    Singing
    Voice acting/audio drama recording
    Map making (cartography)

Not good at all of these, but they have occupied enormous amounts of my time at various points of my life:

Music (Vocals, guitar, keyboards, flute, recorders, noisemakers of various types; also composition/songwriting)
Collecting obsolete technology (slide rules, old calculators, navigation aids, etc.)
Out-and-out nerdery (math and physics are fun!)
Martial arts (can't practice these any more because I have bad knees)
Sleeping, dozing, napping, snoozing, and variations on the theme. I have developed fearsome skills at nap-fu. Threaten me, and I'll snore you into submission.

Making and playing musical instruments (folk harp, guitar, mandolin, and many more)
    Singing
    Reading
    Writing
    Camping
    Woodworking and wood carving
Home brewing (mostly meads these days, although I've made lots of beer and some cider and cordials)

No longer practiced, due to shoulder problems:

    Archery
Hang gliding (which was, in a way, my profession for twenty years as instructor, sail loft foreman, manager in a factory, test pilot, and a little design work)

I've been getting into sudoku and logic puzzles recently. It's a fun way to spend some free time, and it makes me feel good when I can see myself improving at something like that.

Made a ginger and cinnamon Metheglin not too long ago. It fermented to about an 18%. It was pricey to make, but it was damn good.

I love sudoku and have been a regular at https://logic.puzzlebaron.com/ for the last couple of months. It's good stuff and I don't feel as guilty as playing regular video games.

Everybody has some really practical hobbies! I wish I was handy with more practical crafts.

I did forget to add Painting and Magic tricks/sleight of hand. Mostly cause I've been painting for such a long time and because of how recently I've practiced and how amateur I am at sleights of hand. Really only good with coin tricks.

Reading - anything, really, except technical manuals
    Collecting books
Writing - I feel like this is more like my side job that doesn't pay more than a hobby, honestly
Book binding - I've made a few notebooks over the years and I plan on making more when I live in a place conducive to that
Music - listening, playing the piano (violin when I can get to it), and singing
Cooking - I like experimenting with food a lot. Sometimes it works, sometimes it's a burn the house down move away kind of situation.
Baking - bread in particular, but sometimes cookies and sometimes other sweet things
Paper crafting - separate from book binding, but I used to make envelopes out of scrapbook paper and then make cards to go with them.
Sewing - I don't do it often, but I like coming up with small projects. I made the bag I use as a purse now. I hate calling it a purse though... don't know why.

I want to get into learning new instruments. My goal is the cello one day, and the Irish harp. I played my stepmom's the other day, and it felt right, haha. Eventually I'd like to be a music creator along with the hundreds of other things I want to do with my life.

I think that's all I've got at the moment.

    • Music (from finding obscure indie bands, to playing [piano and clarinet], to collecting eclectic instruments) -- this one is abandoned. i finally buried the dead horse i'd been kicking and admitted this was a childhood thing i'd lost interest in a long while ago. i was only collecting instruments in an attempt to stoke the fire with something new and interesting. but let me tell you, there are not many online resources for learning instruments that are only popular in small places or ancient times.
    • Languages (German and Spanish, I try so hard to maintain this one... well, maybe not all that hard)
    • Baking/cooking
    • Gardening (right now i'm concentrating on hot peppers!)
    • Exercise and sports (although i don't really have any "sports" at the moment--past ones were softball, tennis, and running)
    • Beer (mostly sampling as many different ones as I can, I didn't like home brewing)
    • Nature (nature walks, camping, studying local plants and wildlife)
    • Crafts (crochet, sculpting, painting, doodling, wreath making, etc ...my interests change but i usually always have a craft hobby)
    • Gaming (video and board games...although all gaming has been pushed to the back burner while i raise young kids)
    • Psychology (an obsession actually, but after my eyes dried out I finally took a break and haven't studied it in years. It's like that scene at the end of Babe after he completes the competition: "That'll do pig. That'll do." Stick a fork in me.)
    • Photography (wildlife/nature)
    • Writing and reading of course

Hah! I went so far as to collect all the dandelions around my house before looking at all the limp things in my basket and wondering what the hell I was thinking.

It can be done, but it's tricky and I made some noob goofs. My father could do it. He made a batch once that tasted like buttery fruit cake in wine-form. It was a masterpiece. I let it sit in the lees too long without racking and tried to supplement yeast nutrients with raisins. Mine ended up too sweet, there's a bit of taste and it wound up being almost 18%. Tried to brew it like mead and that did not work. lol

I listen to music, in more genres and subgenres than your standard human. :p
Also a medium tier sketch artist, but more on the lower end, but more advanced
than stick peoples, but not photo quality either. :p
Suppose I could count my fetish as a hobby at this point...IDK.

I always saw this as more of a profession. After all, if you love something and you're good at it, you should never do it for free.

Yeah, you know, I did go pro for a while, and I'll have you know I was in high demand and turning a nice profit, but... It took all the passion out of it, you know? What with corporate oversight and everything.

Oh my god, y'all are hilarious. I had to cough for five minutes about this conversation.

    --

I also forgot I like camping and nature things. It's weird because I feel like we all have a "yes, I like to talk about myself" part of us, but then when put on the spot (or metaphorically so in the case of internet), we blank on what we think makes us interesting. Maybe that's just a me thing....

I also run a food blog, a book review blog, and a writing blog. All three are on a break for the holidays, but I've got plans for January. I got myself a really fancy Canon camera to take photos, and honestly, now photography means something more to me. Seeing how light changes the effect of the photo is just so much fun, and I spend hours working on the smallest things. It's a great way to find out where my back hurts, too.
