Just a little something I wanted to write. Any thoughts? Umbral Monochromatic, dark spheres that can change size from one inch to fifteen feet across. They manipulate shadow and potentialities, and flicker between here and Outside. They have a five-lobed, heavily wrinkled and folded brain, and at the end of each lobe is a dark disc or lens. The brain is held within a baggy sac, with highly pressurized blood between it and the inner skin on the armored shell. Their shadows can manifest anywhere within a 10-1000 foot radius, depending on the Umbral. These can even appear inside the body of a foe, so long as there is darkness to draw from. These form jaws and other awful weapons, finishing off any enemy in seconds. Light harms them, and weakens their shell. They do not breed, but instead simply appear from nowhere. Umbral dwell in either abstract cities eaten from underground or in layered portals within our reality. These portals are created by their shadow abilities. An Umbral will frequently absorb a foe with a shadow, sending them Outside.
Interesting, if not a bit more into the Sci-Fantasy realm. Kinda in a way reminds me of the shadow puppet tech of the Killer Klowns from Space. Other than that I can't really say, but will wait and see how they are portrayed in your story.
This sounds like a promising premise for a space travelling race or a race of underground dwellers. If they don't breed, how are they born? Are they the psychic residue of a violent death? Like if a star was to go nova, this is the "body" that's left after the death?
That’s the mystery. They have seemingly no origins, merely appearing one day and going about their alien business. There’s rumors that their appearance coincides with the death of a God of Night...
https://www.themonstersknow.com/meazel-tactics/ I saw this after reading this thread. It might be interesting. Keith also has a podcast if you're into that stuff.
