Really? I kinda' got more of a, "Them Nazis. They'll exterminate you as soon as look at you, but they had exquisite taste in table wear."
What I really find interesting is the way western culture (of which I am admitted part) makes fetish of the Nazi phenomenon. There are people interested in other facets of that war, other players, other participants, but none seem to hold the same mythic stature of Naziism. What Japan did to China, what Spain did to itself, Italy's toadying up to Germany... all of these are known knowns, but they don't evoke that same sense of something Tolkien/Herbert in scale like the Nazis. Is it just me, or do you get that same feeling out of a comparison of those things?
I remember watching the movie Valkyrie with Tom Cruise and one scene had an indoor swimming pool with a giant swastika plastered on the bottom. What other group had such an iconic presence to take the time to tile a giant Nazi swastika on the bottom of a pool?
I think that's true. I wonder if the mysticism that gets associated (rightly or wrongly) with the Nazis has an impact on that. The idea they were into spiritualism, or ancient mysteries, and so on, that permeates a lot of the popular culture around Nazis.
Yeah! That! It's easy to see how the mythologizing began (and simply never stopped) with the Nazis' own propaganda machine inventing the myth that made their rise possible from a cultural standpoint.
