How many words should a children's story book have (7 - 10 yr range)?

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by kaloni, Sep 4, 2012.

I wanted to know what is the standard for children story book series - 5000 words, 10,000 words or 15,000 words?

The age range for my series is 7 - 10 years old.

My book is evolving to around 14,000 words. Should I split it down to two parts say about 5000 to 7000 words?

    TIA

is it a picture book, or a chapter book?

i suggest you google for this info as it's readily available on children's book writing sites...

It's an early chapter book. I have googled and found different views....some say 5000 words ( for eg books like magic tree house where the 1st book was 5000 and went upto 8000 for the next in series)...some say 15,000 is okay. So I am a bit undecided. My protagonist is 8 yrs old and the genre is fantasy.

do the requisite research... see what's out there and selling well for the early chapter book crowd in that genre... then aim for the middle range re your word count...
