    Names for a hero?

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by thewrittingBunny, May 19, 2011.

I need some good hero names, names that would go good on a boy hero.
Perhaps some fantasy sounding ones, since the story takes place in a fantasy world.
Anything would be helpful, thanks! ;)

Before taking a random 'hero' sounding name you may want to take a look at your people and their culture in your world. You may find a great name for a hero, but unless it fits into the local culture, it will probably sound out of place.

For example, imagine a local named Bob in India, a person named Gilgamesh in medival Japan, or a Native American named Brian in the wild west.

You can do some Google searches to fantasy name generators. Sometimes those give interesting ideas that you can tweak or take as-is. Or look at names from various cultures.

The Neal Stephenson reference was to his book Snowcrash (an excellent book), where one of the characters is named "Hiro Protagonist." Subtle, eh?

Haha, this is the name of my RP character. XP He is the brother of my other RP character Aimi Aiko (check out my username and pic).

But not to be trolling, I'll get to the advice, suggestion, idea, etc.

I usually use A LOT of Google when finding specific names. I usually think of the race, origin, etc. that my character is, then I usually do a lot of searching in order to find the name that best fits. XD

This is exactly what I was thinking. It depends what the character's setting is based on. You name him according to his setting.

I like using babynames.com and go advanced to look for names due to culture (ie: Welsh, Sanskrit ect)

    Hi,

I often take normal names and just alter a letter here and there. My wizard Marjan was taken from Martin for example.

But also go with the setting a little. Roman names - Maximus etc, sound heroic, but won't sit well in a Celtic fantasy.

    Cheers.

If your story is set in a fantasy world, where all of the characters will have unique names, I'd suggest thinking about the naming structure you'd like to use in the world at large. Do characters in the world use surnames? Are certain letter combinations or sounds favored? Are apostrophes or hyphens commonplace in names? Perhaps different groups/tribes within the world have different styles of names. Having a linguistic filter of sorts is a subtle way to set the tone of a new world.

If the story is set on contemporary Earth, I generally prefer using names that you think sound good--without overthinking any special meanings that names might have (unless that is a key plot point in the story).

I also use that site especially under name meanings, and I lace their personality type into their name. Example one of my characters is Isandro: which means "one who is freed" through out the story he struggles to find his own path away from those who have controlled his whole life. thus 'freeing' himself and living into his name's meaning.

Subtle but I feel it adds some depth.

One more thing to keep in mind. Sometimes how you spell the name can have unforeseen effects.

I was once going to name a character Gen'tal.

A friend saw the name and mentioned how every time she saw it she kept misreading it as 'genital.' :(
