a physics/biology question for the extremely savvy. EMP and the human brain.

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by dave_c, May 15, 2012.

This is research for a story I'm writing though not directly related to writing hence in this

Basically from my limited understanding EMP simple overloads a circuit. The human brain is little more than an incredibly advance/complicated circuit, yet holds either some or complete immunity to EMP.

so, if an EMP was strong enough COULD it possible fry a humans circuitry.

    thanks.

It could, if it were powerful enough, depolarize the neurons in the brain. The ions that make neural activity take place will migrate in response to a rapid change in magnetic flux, but it is on a much lower magnitude than the current flow induced in a conductor by the same magnetic flux.

A magnetic spike of that magnitude would also affect other biochemicals, and would probably cook the person like a strong microwave pulse.

Not to mention the effect on amalgam tooth fillings, surgical screws and pins, jewelry, and tinfoil beanies.
