Didn't read the 3 pages, but the premise reminded me of the Trojan War which featured the Trojan Horse...Could take inspiration?

Have the Bad guys this big super-weapon that has a very low rate of fire but could easily break through the walls with a couple of shots and have an epic battle but that's just me. Im kinda of a actiony person so it might fit my writings but not yours. But hey, it's a suggestion right? :p

Heather A: This sounds very much like you are accusing Mallory of something. Please stop. Every story idea has been done before and will be done again, repeatedly. There is no protection on story ideas, for a reason. Story ideas are next to useless. All that matters is exactly how each writer assembles or interprets the eveints of the story.

But what we have here is yet another example of why offering private critiques is risky, and why requesting them in the absence of an explicit offer is prohibited on this site.

Cogito is right. Everything will be similar but different. If you seen Avatar the Last Airbender when they are fighting off Firebenders in the Northern Water Kingdom and the boats are invading, is quite like Minas Titrtih in Lord of the Rings. But in Boat style. Mallory is using a different concept in the same manner. It sounds different then Lord of the Rings and Avatar. That's a good thing.

As for your story problem, maybe there are old service tunnels or smugglers' passages, either used during the city's construction, or part of the older ruins this city was built upon. Now you only have to decide how your troop learns of and locates those tunnels.

Just as Cog suggested, a city of the magnitued you've discribed will most likely have storm drains large enough for people to travel through. Just look at any city plan of the compariable size of your city and you will fine many types of underground service tunnels, drains, sewers and allsorts, even water intakes, you could have them come out of an old well.

Smoke signals? bribe a guard? blow up the wall in one place and sneak in through another? homing pigeion?
send a letter to the connection and arrange a meeting after you have gotton inside? perhaps via the above mentioned bird?? battle high tech with low tech as the story demands seems to me the logical answer, we could not find Osama for 10 yrs because he stayed off the net, and cell phones, used notebooks and curriors to get messages around... life is stranger than fiction sometimes.

I think Cogito's suggestions are good as well. Consider that the city has to have a way for clean water to get in, to bring food and other items to its populace. If those things come into the city then there has to be some physical means by which they do so. If you want to go with a stealthy entrance to the city, they could find out how some of that is done and make a plan...

How about 2 teams, team 1 causes a ruckus at that north side, and at the south side, team 2 fires an arrow or a bullet, killing one of the guards/knocking them out, then they fire an arrow or some sort with a rope on it, climb up, take the guard's disguise, and bingo they're in and have control over the tower to let the others on. :)

lol. idk if you'd like that.
