    How to describe dragon scale?

Discussion in 'Fantasy' started by Viserion, Nov 30, 2020.

In a short story I’m working on, the dragons have pure, impossibly black scales. They’re kind of like a living optical illusion, where your eyes just slid off of them because the human brain isn’t meant to see that sort of thing.

I’m having trouble describing this, though, any advice? And what do you think of it?

My point being that you just did

S'pose I was alone in imagining, at first glance, that you meant a spectrum, from this:

    ... to this:

I prefer the second kind, and hereby name this little one 'Ember'.

if your making your black/obsidian dragons almost 'eldritch horror' with their scales, just look up some texts revolving around those beings on how their are not meant for mortal eyes and minds. but i would probably make use of the word's 'abyss' 'empty' 'void' or 'impossible' when describing them.

I actually hadn’t even thought of that route, but it works perfectly. Thanks!
