I have written all but my final two chapters for my first book in a series and now I am struggling. I generally do not lack ideas but as there are only two chapters left I have less wriggle room if that makes sense. I also dont want to write another 10 chapters to end the book either! The story is 55k words so far. It is set between our world and a fantasy world so there has been lots of world building etc. The characters are dynamic and varied, there is plenty of conflict in dialogue. In short I am happy with everything. The whole book leads to this point: In the 2nd last chapter two teenagers find their way into the fantasy world and are stunned by what they find. In order for the story to make sense they will need to return home safely to their families. Please vote for your preffered ending or suggest another. Thanks!
Hi Richach, Congrats on your book finally coming to completion! Regarding the three choices you posted. The porthole option seems a bit cliched and overdone so I would advice against it. For the option of them being rescued by brother and sister with the help of a neighbor, I would need to know what relationships exist between all of the characters, without that knowledge I am unable to recommend it. Which leaves "they find their own way home" as the only plausible option at the moment. But, is it the only option? Have you considered other more novel approaches to end it? (I'm thinking along the lines of the Wizard of OZ, The Neverending story etc.)
Ha! Falkor is so cool. I just happen to have several magical beasts or animals that could do the job! I will give that serious thought. Cheers Mish. The house that they have lived in acts as an official porthole to get to the fantasy land. Although the characters do not know this. They used an unofficial porthole to get into the land and much trouble ensues. The house porthole is enchanted to drag the teenagers back through when they are in range. I am not sure about this but it would work. I am open to ideas still.
Have family members go through the house portal using magical beasts to rescue them after they discover to their dismay that the teenagers went through it. Family members then explain that they are keepers of the portal and have no idea how to close until the teenagers reveal what they found.
What if they keep getting rejected by the world, like a foreign body invading a host? Like it's hunting them down in various magical ways. They only escape because they are forcibly cast out. Maybe they sink into the ground and re-materialize here (something mystical anyway). They never realized it was the exit that was chasing them. In the end, it gets them when they sleep. Teen A, who wanted to return, realizes at the end that the only reason they were "trapped" was because Teen B wanted to stay. Teen A also realizes that if he/she wanted to stay too, then they both would have. Something like that would give the reader ideas to think about at the end.
Ok thanks all. I have got it now, I just got bogged down in the story as it had acheived all but the final goal. They will get pulled back through the portal. That is an easy option, but it will allow me to put emphasis on a dramatic reunion. Teenage angst and all! Mish and Seven you have got my thinking back on track, I appreciate it.
