I currently have a bookcase upstairs in my room organized by fiction series for four of the shelves and the fifth is just a collection of random books. My bookcase downstairs in the office has more writing books, books on finance, etc. I do plan to either buy a bookcase and organize shelves by "writing books", "editing books", "publishing books", etc., but I need to unlazy myself first. :)

I organize by color. And I never mix hardcovers and paperbacks. I also have some standing up and some stacked laying down. I have a pretty small book collection. When libraries were open I was a regular. FYI -- I think I have one green book.

Books in separate bookcases by category. That's how I do it, too.

@Wreybies, I think it was, started a thread here a few years ago where people posted photos of their bookshelves. I wanted to join in, but I have too many and never got around to it.

My house is essentially a library. In fact I came up with an idea for a tale of a man living in a small shack who insulates it by lining every wall entirely with books.

You could open a used bookstore.

Ahem! I stand for the green books, unwanted tomes waiting to be read when one realizes that the flashy books are more shallow than not.

That said, I've not got any on my bookshelf (nor have I found a good local used bookshop) but have been known to pick the odd one up in the hospital bookshelf.

Okay first, just to be clear, that's not me or my house, just a pic I found to illustrate the idea. :D

I have traded some of them at a used book store called the Booktrader, but she only takes pocket-style paperbacks, larger ones if they're less than 5 years old, and is fairly selective in what she takes even within those restrictions. I haven't been able to get rid of the hardbacks or larger paperbacks. Several other used book shops in town have closed recently. There's an annual Book Fair where you can donate and they sell stacked books by the inch, I think a dollar per. But I haven't been able to find out when or where it'll be. Currently unable to use eBay. Seems like I'm stuck with them unless I set up a stand on the street, and that might get shut down by Big Brother.

Mine are organised by where they land when I toss them across the room.

I can't believe it took me til now to remember why this thread was poking me at the back of my head. Not the JK Rowling picture I posted, but this story!

A well-meaning cleaner who took the opportunity to give a locked-down library a thorough clean re-shelved all of its books - in size order.

Staff at Newmarket Library, Suffolk, discovered the sloping tomes after the building underwent a deep clean.

James Powell, of Suffolk Libraries, said staff "saw the funny side" but it would take a "bit of time" to correct.

"It looks like libraries will be closed for a while so we'll have plenty of time to sort the books out", he said.

"The cleaner is lovely and does a great job in the library. It was an honest mistake and just one of those things so we would never want her to feel bad about it," he added.

The 4th and 5th books from the right, on the top shelf, are clearly smaller than the ones following, and should therefore have been at the end. This cleaner should stick to cleaning.

That's actually kind of wholesome, I mean the cleaner's thoroughness and the library's response.

    ^ I think it's called obsessive compulsion.

Maybe, in which case it's less wholesome.
