How would you describe this shape?

Discussion in 'Research' started by funkybassmannick, Apr 5, 2011.

I'm trying to figure out how to describe this shape in my book. The outline is like an eye: rounded and comes to two points. The only difference is that it is 3D, like if you spun that shape on its points, so you have kind of a sphere coming to two points on the end. Is there a name for this shape? Geometry was never my favorite...

    Thanks!

It's shaped like a lemon, correct? Or did I not understand your description correctly? There isn't a name that I know for it exactly, but it sounds like the shape of a lemon.

Thanks guys! Prolate ellipsoid was what I was wondering. Unfortunately I don't think it will go over very well in my middle-grade reader. However, lemon and football are great suggestions!

    Thanks a lot!

    Prolate spheroid.

EDIT: I didn't see coolie's response at the time I posted this. His answer is more accurate.

Lemon is good. Football will work for American readers...not so much for others.

The answer's been given, but I'll try a couple in laymen's terms. Rounded cat's eye? Oval gem?
