    Greetings

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Lazaares, Apr 17, 2020.

    Greetings everyone.

Registered here as with the lockdown about I've gotten a tingle to write again, definitely don't want to lose the momentum.

Have been on-and-off writing forever; finished a whole bunch of short stories but never anything longer. Got a novel piece in the making, a lovely 9th draft (although 2nd may suit it better as only one draft ever came close to being finished). It's the kind-of project that started as a novella and grew to be ... a lot.

Writing-wise, I gravitate towards fiction. My longer pieces are low fantasy (I am a weirdo writing fantasy in a Napoleonic setting), my shorter pieces range from fantasy to Whodunit? and some surrealistic / kafkaesque sketches. I'm a 3rd language English speaker; first started writing in English to learn the language when I was 15. I welcome any advice / pointers with my use of the language; there's always more to learn and ways to improve.

IRL I am a subject expert in accounting, assisting the leadership of a lil' team that handles confusing corporate matters. This also means I'm working from home during the lockdown, so there's that. My hobbies are fencing, playing music and studying an array of random knowledge. I'll likely comment a lot on worldbuilding / research related topics as I love to share this knowledge.

Welcome Lazaares. I like the avatar. Does that mean one of your other two languages is French?

Fencing? Cool. I like staff fighting, but have never tried fencing. How good did you get?

No; those are Hungarian and German. I tried learning French, my mind fell blunt & and I surrendered after a year. It's the flag of the fictional country/nation about which I write my main project and some of my short stories.

I used to train Judo in a dojo; I took that rather serious and even competed in it. Fencing I picked up a year and a half ago, so still getting into it. I really enjoy it; suffice to say I picked up longsword fencing which is more relaxed / casual in its community than olympic fencing. I've yet to challenge myself with a formal competition; for the while I am confined to practice on my balcony.

    Hello, Lazaares!

I’m one of the forum moderators, and I want to welcome you to the forum.

You already sound as if you have a lot of experience experimenting with different forms of fiction ...and I'm sure you'll prove to be a huge asset to the forum. All the things you mentioned, worldbuilding, 'low fantasy' inspired by historical periods, even surreal sketches, are popular here. (Some of the surreal sketches might be unintentionally so, but there you go. :) ) So dig in.

In order to help you get oriented and get settled, here are a couple of links I strongly recommend that you read at the start, if you haven’t already. They will give you a good idea of how we operate here on the forum:

    New Member Quick Start

    Forum Rules

You will notice in the New Member Quick Start that in order to post your work in the Workshop area—the only area of the forum where you are allowed to ask for feedback—you will need to do at least two critiques for other people, in exchange for receiving feedback on one of your own pieces of work. This site is designed around the concept of members helping each other out by ‘paying it forward’—through our two-for-one critique system. Do two critiques, THEN you can post something of your own. This advance 2:1 ratio lasts as long as your membership here.

In order to help you get started doing critiques, here is a link to a good article written by one of our former moderators: https://www.writingforums.org/threads/constructive-critiques.20627/

One of the popular areas of our forum is our contest section. There is a monthly contest running for Short Stories, Flash Fiction and Poetry. You can enter these ongoing contests, even as a new member. And we really encourage you to visit the site, read the current entries, and vote for your favourite when the voting period starts. This means a lot to the people who have written these entries. And it will also give you a good idea of what our members are capable of writing.

While the Role Playing Game section is not new, it’s being given a revamp. So if you are interested in playing and writing Role Playing Games, you might want to visit this section and get in on the fun. https://www.writingforums.org/threads/resurrecting-the-dead-rpg-section-rebuild.165055/

I hope you have fun getting to know us and let us get to know you, via the posts you make. Please feel free to explore the forum. There is a lot under the hood. This site map might help you find your way around more quickly than the menu bars do, so feel free to use it. https://www.writingforums.org/faq/

If you encounter any difficulties, don’t hesitate to contact me or one of the other moderators, whose names appear in yellow at the bottom of the Community page. We will be glad to help.

    Again, welcome!

    Cheers for now,
    Jan
