I've written a novel with a mix of gay and straight characters and I'm wondering whether approaching gay publishers might be better than mainstream publishers. Are there any gay publishing houses out there?
Well. The answer is is that you are going to approach ever serious publisher out there that deals with you genre. Gay, straight or whatever.
I have a gay character in my story, but when I plan to get it published, I will still approach a normal publishing house. I don't think the character sexuality has a huge effect on your chances of getting published or not.
It's not a "gay publisher" that you want, but a publishing house that accepts stories in your genre. Simply having gay characters does not make it a "gay genre". Your book might be a fantasy tale or romance or sci-fi, but with a gay storyline, etc.
Thanks for your comments. The plot follows four people's lives and their relationships and the interaction between them but it's set in Provincetown US and deals with some gay issues too. For that reason I thought a publishing house that specialised in gay fiction might be the answer.
Where are you planning on publishing ? If you are planning to publish in the UK get hold of a copy of the Writers and Artists Yearbook - think most libraries have a copy. There is a pretty comprehensive list of Agents and Publishers in there and an indication about what they will or will not accept.
yes, there are publishing houses that specialize in gay fiction and non-fiction... to find them, go to www.duotrope.com i also have some lists of publishers that include what genres they accept... if you email me, i can send them to you...
