I did it! they bought my manuscript

Discussion in 'Success Stories' started by Gloria Sythe, Aug 4, 2015.

Can you believe this!!!!!! My first time at a full length novel , 171 thousand words and Random House accepted my manuscript. When I got the phone call from the agent this morning, I broke into tears. How many wanna- be writers have their first full length manuscript accepted.

My only regret is they don't want to use the cover picture that I wanted. But who cares!!! I can't mention the title or the what the story is about until the book is printed and sent to their clubs and book stores .

It's also very encouraging because of the 171,000 word count. We're led to believe that no first time author has a chance with a novel that length! Nice to know that's not always the case.

It's wonderful news. And Random House is a venerable publishing house, too. Many MANY congratulations!

I see you can't mention title or story, but can you tell us what genre (if any) the book will fit into?

Yep. I can name many first novels with a high word count, but advice on writing forums tends to perpetuate the idea that it can't be done.

    Awesome!

Are you allowed to post the first sentence?

Thank-you people. Now that I have come down off cloud nine I will answer a few PMs.

First though..........@Aaron DC......"Are you allowed to post the first sentence?"
I have no idea if that's allowed or not. I can't/won't do it for that reason. I don't want to do anything that will upset the apple cart. Sorry Aaron.

These people seemed to have no problem with 171 thousand words, so that sort of debunks that repeated piece of advice.

Before you sign your piece of work to them for life plus 70 years, make sure they give you a meaty advance and don't take advantage of you cause your a newbie.

Don't sell them anything that you think you could make on your own over time.

Self publishing is always an option. Plus you'll have your book, not them.

    Ebooks are forever.

And you can hire a professional cover artist to get the cover you want. Don't let them control you. Traditional publishing isn't the only option anymore...

@Gloria Sythe: Congratulations! It's good to know that completely unknown, unconnected people can still make the leap.

I'm curious about the genre, too. Please let us know what it is. I can't imagine RH objecting to that since it won't be revealing anything specific enough to allow competitors to steal your thunder.

In what genre is your novel?

Also, how did you manage to find an agent who wasn't scared off by the word count?

I don't see that. I see genuine support and a thirst for more details, the better to educate us all.
