I hate my book's title. Help me think of a better one to propose to my publisher

Discussion in 'Novels' started by Laurin Kelly, Feb 5, 2017.

I haaaaaaate the title of my second book, which has been accepted by my publisher and is now in the editing process. They do not seem unduly disturbed by my working title (Fatal Kiss), but I'd like to propose something I like better because when I see it I just feel cheesy and unhappy. Here's the blurb/synopsis:

Fatal Kiss tells the story of two rival assassins, Rob Disoro and Kelan Pratt, who start off as adversaries but eventually team up against a common foe and fall in love along the way. Rob and Kelan are both cold-blooded killers who at the beginning are only concerned with one thing: being the best in the business. After turning up for the same job twice (hired by opposing forces), an attraction develops and eventually circumstances that threaten their own lives have them collaborating on a mission that takes them to a safe house where they're forced to look past appearances and into their hearts. Can they beat the odds and leave their bloody, criminal past behind to start anew?

I am the worst at titles so I can't help, but Fatal Kiss sounds fine to me! It seems to fit the plot very well.

Best I got is Warm-Blooded Killers. I am the worst.

I think I hate it because I chose it randomly from the lyrics of a Duran Duran song as a placeholder. That can't be okay? But maybe is is?

Course it is! Doesn't matter whether it comes instantly from a song or over a year from a flash of inspiration at midnight on a school night (coughcoughMe). If it fits, it fits.

Laurin, Thomas Harris stated that he didn't know the title of 'The silence of the lambs' until he had finished his book (the title is the last line in the book.) Maybe you should try to finish your story, and as you write the title might just pop right out in front of you.

    Candles in the cold.

It seems the characters live in a world of cold-bloodedness but there is a spark of warmth.

Fatal Kiss, seems like a good title to me honestly. It's catchy and judging from the synopsis seems to fit the plot too. Of course, you're the one who has to like it at the end of the day, but I think it can really work as the title.

I'm sorry if I'm not more helpful, truth is I'm pretty shit at coming up with titles myself.

I don't hate Fatal Kiss. It's a bit melodramatic, but assassin-lovers is a pretty melodramatic storyline, right? So maybe the title is good?

All's Fair, as in "all's fair in love and war"?

When I thought about it, it's the only possibility that didn't make me immediately say, "Meh. No."

Yes, 'Fatal Kiss' is dreadful... don't do it.

    How about this... Crossed Hearts.
    Or, Double Cross Hearts?

I want to thank everyone so far for all the suggestions, as well as those who said they don't think the original title might not be so bad after all. At the end of the day I'll go with whatever my publisher recommends, but at least now I'll have some other options to propose in the meantime.

    Hi,

Thought of another - "Stone Cold Romance". It is a romance isn't it?

    Cheers, Greg.
