Just submitted first query, fingers crossed

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by D.T.Roberts, Feb 5, 2011.

It's as finished as its going to get. After revising the re-writes and rewriting the revisions, I'm finished.
I just sent my first query. Just the one. I'm the kind of guy who goes in the water a little at a time. Maybe I should just jump in, but I want to frame my first response good or bad.

Best of luck and well done. Let us know how you get on with it.

Rejections are as good as acceptances. Even more so when you get feedback. If you get rejected, it just means that you are one query closer to finding the perfect market for your work. :)

Bes of luck. It will (most likely) result in a rejection; but getting rejected is the final test of becoming a real writer. No I take that back, continuing to submit to publishers after the first rejection is the final test. The first rejection is the start of your journey.

    ooooooo *shivers* scarry.
Rejections are actually good. (I've had quite a few.) You can learn a lot.
    Best of luck to you.
By the way... what kind of work are you trying to get published?

    congrats!

who are you querying?... agent?... magazine editor?... book publisher?

are you aware that it could be many months before you get a response and that you may not even get one at all?

which is why seasoned writers send out several or even lots of queries at a time, rather than wait for a single reply that may never come... it's like sowing only one seed in poor soil, instead of a lot, so the chances are maximized that one may actually grow into a plant, whereas with just one seed, the chances of failure are greatest...

wasn't trying to make him feel bad, just be aware of the reality, so he won't worry if he gets no response for a long while, or at all...

what do you see wrong with that?

I'm sure he knows he faces rejection. Most of us do. But this post was to celebrate another step on the way to publication.

Even if it goes not further, not everyone get to that point. It is, in intself an achievement.

I don't see anything wrong with reality checks, I just think there's a time and place.

Now it seems REAL. I just got my first rejection. :)
Thanks to all for your support.

Don't worry,I didn't take any of the comments on here as discouraging. I expect rejections. It's a learning experience. I just have to find the right agent.
I'm sure it's a numbers game. I may need to rework my query.

My novel is a cross between a crime suspense and medical thriller.

I'm assuming it's a novel you're trying to submit if you're going to agents?

It's great that you're querying. Congrats on the rejection (that still sounds odd, even though I've said it dozens of times), and best of luck for the future.

This is a copy of the letter

    Dear Mr. Roberts,

Thanks for writing about your novel, but I’m afraid I didn’t connect with the story strongly enough to feel I’d be the advocate the book deserves. I’ll step aside, then, with best wishes for your finding the right match elsewhere.

    Sincerely,
    Stacia Decker

Tremendous rejection! Sounds really positive and like it was just a personal preference. If you're getting rejections like that then you're doing something very right.

Actually, I'm sending 10 at a time. That way, if I do get any feedback, I can make adjustments/revisions as needed before sending to more agents.
