    I need a word

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by cologirl42, Sep 7, 2010.

what words would any of you use to describe the sound of a high powered rifle being fired. The animal gets away but my subject is standing about 100 feet from the shooter.

Bang bang just doesn't cut it and Ka voom seems dumb. Please don't laugh too hard!::confused:

    Clap, Crack, report.

If you are a few hundred feet from a gun and the bullet goes over your head you would hear a 'Snap.' before you would hear the gun fire.

    "Crack" works. Like pine splitting.

It mostly depends on the type of rifle, as they each have their own sound.

Mostly though you'll hear a crack or a pop when the gun fires. It'll mostly sound like a blown tire, or like distant thunder.

    How about this?

The driver jumped out of the vehicle, opened the back door, jerked his rifle out, leveled it and shot toward the bear. The women flinched at the sudden piercing crack of the high powered rifle.

...peering through the cross hairs of his twelve power zoom scope, the hunter fixes his prey within his sights. Drawing several deep breaths, the hunter oxygenates his blood as he focuses his attention on the quarry. Drawing a deep breath, the hunter holds it, while slowly squeezing the trigger of his rifle with the fleshy tip of his index finger.

In a zen moment of total concentration, the hunter becomes one with his weapon. The hunter can hear his own heart beat slow as he becomes aware of the slow compression of the trigger spring...slowly...slowly...until a thundering BOOM echoes across the countryside, as the weapon kicks hard into his shoulder.

As the rapidly dispersing puff of smoke from the rifle's muzzle fades and the smell of spent gunpowder hangs heavy in the air, the marksman realizes that his prey has fled the scene.

At least, that is how I would describe such a thing :)

That is great, I wouldn't plagerize your words but I will give some thought to re-wording my sentence.

Whenever I've heard a gun go off, it always reminds me of a whip cracking.

"Crack" would be my vote :p
