    Dashing Commas

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Scavenger, Sep 15, 2007.

One of my biggest problems in my writing is my inconsistent and more often than not incorrect use of appositives and descriptive phrases inserted into a sentence. What I don't know is how one determines if they should be separated by commas or dashes or...some form of punctuation that up until this point I did not even know existed. My grammar in general is fairly good, but I'm never sure if I've got this one right.

    Anyone care to instruct me?

    Many thanks.

I suspect that this might be one of those things where there are strict rules in the US and (at best) nebulous guidelines for those of us who spell colour with a "u."

Here's what Strunk says about it:

you really need to get yourself a good punctuation guide!... i use harry shaw's 'punctuate it right!'... there are other good ones on the market and you can even find some online... here's one i use for quick 'n dirty info on what you're asking about:

    Overview of Punctuation

it's far from a complete punctuating guide, though... so, if you find a good online one, let me know, ok?...

    hugs, maia

I find commas to be quite dashing in a tuxedo.
