Iain Banks (also Iain M. Banks) has terminal cancer

    Just read this:

    Not good.

Not that he's likely to see this, but my sympathies go out to him and his loved ones.

I heard about this before. It's a huge shame. I must admit I've not read his stuff, and he's low on my 'to read' list, but still. Always a shame when a writer is in a bad state. :(

Was saddened to read this and seeing it on the news last night :( I have only read a handful of his books but I cant remember ever disliking one. Very sad news. James Herbert recently died too, very sad. Sympathies to them all.

This is awful. I enjoyed his Culture series immensely and it influences me a lot in my own attempts at writing. I was actually awaiting the next book eagerly, but... damn. It's always the good ones that die too soon.

@Ian J.: But there is a way you can send him a message and he'll probably read it, too. There's this page that's been created especially for messages from fans.

Already done. It's just that mentioning it here wouldn't get read by him was what I was thinking.

    Wow. I'm a bit shocked.

Iain's died quicker than previously expected:
