    Iambic Pentameter Scan help

Discussion in 'The Craft of Writing Poetry' started by OurJud, Mar 2, 2018.

I can't find the thread @OJB created for people to post their poetry for scanning, but I want to practice some blank verse in iambic pentameter and need to know if I'm hearing my stresses correctly.

Can someone who fully understands and considers themselves proficient in iamb pent' run their ears over this and let me know if it's in perfect iambic pentameter?

I'm assuming the lines in this form don't have to end on a full stop.

The bare trees black from winter's touch, no leaves

    Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert, but it looks right to me :) Hopefully someone with more knowledge on the subject will come along and confirm/deny if this is true.

And no, I don't think it has to end on a full stop in blank verse.

Thanks, @8Bit Bob - was it you who said in a recent poetry post that you were currently writing blank verse in iamb pent'?

It was that post which inspired this practice session.

Yes, that was me. I've been working on it over the past month and a half or so (or maybe longer/shorter, I can't quite remember :p).

Good stuff. I really wish I was comfy writing my poetry in a notebook, but with all the crossing out and amendments it's so much easier on a WP.

Yeah, I do all of my writing (including poetry) on my computer. It's just easier to make changes and such that way.

I've now written this, and would be grateful to anyone for a scan, to check I've maintained perfect iambic pentameter throughout.

    Thanks in advance.

from early morning misty fields of frost.

The Meter scans correct, but there are some Grammar problems. You can't violate grammar rules to make the meter work, such as dropping articles because they are inconvenient.

Good that it scans okay - hurdle one safely jumped.

Now the grammar. Can you please confirm you're referring to L3, as it's the only area I can see where I've taken a slight liberty with grammar?

To fall from THE Branch, and kiss the eath's cold back. (You're missing an article.)
