    Grammar If dogs are substituted for cats, then cats are used.

    That sentence through me so hard. This really means cats are used? I missed an understanding somewhere in grammar class. Hitherto, I assumed the dog was being used instead of the cat.

    Substitute A for B = Replace B with A -> A is used
    Substitute A with B = Replace A with B -> B is used

    I agree with @Jenissej - so dogs would be used in your example.
