If not for that one actor...

Discussion in 'Entertainment' started by Wreybies, Jul 15, 2013.

Films that would have been good, or at least much better if not for that one actor.

Sliding Doors - Gwyneth Paltrow

Watching it now as I'm working on a securities fraud case. She's a wet mop of an actor and her "British" accent in this film is like nails on a chalkboard.

Anything with Johnny Depp in it lately.
I feel like he's winking at the camera and going weeee look at me they think I'm acting. He killed The Tourist
( well the whole idea was sabotaged by hanging on a 'surprise' ending ) , Alice in Wonderland and
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. The trouble is everyone thinks cause he's got a face that could melt
ice cream ( total-sex ) that that makes him sexy. But Depp is the sexiest unsexy man I've ever watched on the
screen outside of some Gary Cooper duds.
The man should be left to droll comedy in co-star parts. He is a character actor but everyone keeps shoving him
into leading man rolls.

The Man In The Iron Mask - John Malkovich. I usually really enjoy Malkovich ("Rounders", "Burn After Reading") but in this movie he gives an utterly lifeless performance that has me cringing.

The Patriot - Joely Richardson. I've never seen her before or since, and that's probably good. It seems that everyone else in the movie is performing and she's still rehearsing.

Contact - Matthew Mcconahey (I don't even care I spelt his last name wrong) Movie could have pretty much happened without him or his character

The Hobbit - Martin Freeman. I would have been happier if Ian Holm was made to look 30 years younger as bad as it would have looked

Brad Pitt in Snatch - his accent was just terrible, absolutely shocking and it's amazing the amount of my American friends thought he pulled it off perfectly :(

You'd think Gwyneth Paltrow wiould be better at a Brit accent seeing as she's married to one (the guy from coldplay)

And Jonnie Depp is crap lately but I loved The Tourist and thought he was great in Sweeney Todd. That vampire film was horrible though and I've never seen the pirate films :(

I think some actors just grab the money and don't care about the film. I'd be the same if someone offered me a few squillion to be crap in an even crappier movie!

A recent one was Jamie Foxx in Django Unchained.

Leonardo DiCaprio was good. Christoper Waltz and Samuel L Jackson were both excellent.

Jamie Foxx was so fucking awful he single-handedly pulled me out of the picture. Zero charisma, no believability, and overall atrocious acting. I can't imagine a worse leading man OR action star, especially since the hero of a Western blaxploitation has to be cool and larger than life.

For fuck's sake, not only was Fred "The Hammer" Williamson ten times better in ultra-cheap 70's blaxploitation flicks, but he would do a far better job than Foxx NOW, at the mere age of 75. I don't get why Foxx keeps getting cast in serious roles. He sucked in "Collateral" too, although granted, that whole film was an abortion.

"Django Unchained" is still a slightly above average film even with such a failure in the lead, but would be massively better with almost anyone else. (A shame Will Smith didn't accept the role, for instance)

Wreybies: I quite liked "Sliding Doors"! It gave me a blissfully relaxed morning in the middle of exams many years ago :D

My pet hate is Katie Holmes in anything, and especially that 'Batman' movie. I was destroyed after watching her ridiculous overacting in what should have been a fantastic film. Also, that blonde woman who was married to Lucas (or Spielberg?) you know the horrible one from the 'Temple of Doom'? She almost ruined it, but the movie was too good overall, which was a blessing. But she was ugh!

Just noticing that most of us are hating on the same-sex actors. That may or may not be significant :)

And let me add one more. ;)

Shane Brolly playing Kraven in the original Underworld. None of the franchise is exactly Oscar-nod worthy, but the little Goth boy that once was me loves them! Shane Brolly, though... His acting in that film was 100% porn-quality acting. He seems to have taken a couple of acting classes for the 5 minutes he appears in the second film before he is viciously shredded. A mercy killing in my book. The dude sucks the pucker out of a donkey's ass.

Wreybies: I actually couldn't watch Underworld because of the acting. I really tried, downloaded all three, they sounded awesome, on paper. What a waste.

I agree with this. The film had several terrific characters played by talented actors who were really committed to giving them life. DiCaprio and Waltz were excellent, Jackson was great, even Don Johnson rocked. Especially in comparison to that cast, Foxx just seemed to suck all the oxygen out of every scene.
