I don't think we disagree, we're just looking at something from different angles. Unless you are saying no non-writer audiences notice tiring tropes. Then we are disagreeing. And I'm not sure movie or TV marketing success is the best measure. Heaven knows what people see in repetitive sitcoms and formulaic detective/cop stories or soap operas. There are successful formulaic novel examples, but those authors are telling the stories well. Agatha Christie, Arthur Conan Doyle, there are lots of successful novel series. But that's what we are agreeing on, it's not the repetitiveness of the story or formula, it's how the writer tells the story. Have you never picked up a book and said, this is an uninteresting repetition?
