    I'm New; Hi!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by Enochiel Lucifel, Aug 4, 2017.

Good day, Writing Forums community! :)

I'm, as the title suggests, new. Even so, I've taken quite the liking to this forum; not a shabby place to post the story that I'm working on as well as the poetry I write. I hope to present said story to you all soon---not too soon, but soon. Maybe a brief excerpt? Yeah. That'll do.

As a brief introduction, here's some minutia regarding myself:

-I've recently graduated high school and I'm 18
    -I love to write
-I love music of all sorts--preferably Celtic Fantasy and Chillstep
-Favorite foods include water and yogurt... okay, maybe some others :p
-I'm a dude... just wanna' let you all know in case the avatar throws you off
-I occasionally visit the good 'ole PS4 when bored
-I love learning languages; they fascinate me. Currently, I'm learning at least 5 (Hebrew, Arabic, Japanese, Korean, and Icelandic)
-I hail from Philly... West Philly!

I think that's enough factoids for one sitting. Anyways, it'll be a pleasure to meet some of you all and see what you guys 'n gals are creatively cookin' up. And, as I mentioned previously, I hope to be able to share my novel with you all soon. For now, you should know that it's entitled "Under Light, In Darkness". Of course, more on that later.

    Hi Enochiel Lucifel,

One of my characters shares your fascination with learning languages. Sorta wishful thinking, maybe, because I've had trouble all my life trying to learn French.

How does it work for you? Once you learn a couple of languages, do you have a technique for learning a new one that draws on how you learned the first ones? Do you have a natural talent, such as a musician or an artist?

    Welcome,
    Bill

I share your fascination with languages, though I am not as proficient as you are.

Good to have you here, and I look forward to seeing you around :D

Well, Bill I wouldn't say I have a natural talent. When it comes to learning languages you're gona' be spending a lot of time learning rules and having to memorize vocabulary. Hence, its purely a matter of diligence and dedication. I wouldn't say that there's an end-all, be-all method for learning either. The languages that I'm learning already help one another when you think about it: Hebrew and Arabic have tons of cognates being as they are both Semite tongues. The root-system also helps a lot. Japanese and Korean, though hotly debated, have many grammatical similarities, some even saying that they share a common origin. As for Icelandic, it's a Germanic tongue. I so happen to have one as my native language (English). :) So my formula is:

    -Dedication
    -Diligent Persistence
    -Passion; have fun with it

    בשמחה

    Y'know.... much like writing! :superwink:

    Welcome.

I am currently writing a blog series for the site on Metrical writing (A device commonly used in poetry): https://www.writingforums.org/entry/a-study-of-metrical-writing-part-1-introduction.63871/

It should provide with valuable information on your journey. I use a mix of poetry and horror stories written in meter as examples to keep things interesting.

I also have a few other resources posted for both poetry and prose. Here is the index: https://www.writingforums.org/entry/orys-writing-notes-introduction-and-thoughts-on-style.63609/

More will be added in the future.

    Enjoy your stay.

    -OJB.
