(for guitarists) what's your fave riff or intro to play?

Discussion in 'The Lounge' started by paperbackwriter, Nov 21, 2018.

    at the moment

    Mark Knopfler's Going Home intro
John Fogarty's intro on "Old man down the road" very short I know but oh so skanky!
I want to learn Sharp Dressed Man next by zz top

I'm not really a riff-oriented guitarist, but there are a few intros I like:

Ship of Fools - Robert Plant (Doug Boyle on guitar)
Siberian Khatru - Yes (Yessongs version) (Steve Howe on guitar)
    Amazing Journey - The Who

I don't really play other's stuff, but I do have a collection of some
of my messing arounds. :p Though I play in B flat with 74-15 Ernie
Ball Customs (at least I did when I still had a guitar). I miss it now
and then, and that thick crunchy tone it had. :(
That and I don't remember the exact tabliture for most of this so...

Im listening to the first few minutes now.
    Motorhead came to mind.
Its a great way to get rid of stress I imagine. Ive never owned an electric. I think I would enjoy had I got into it though.

Yikes! I don't play with anywhere near that much distortion. I prefer a purer sound.

Another riff I love is the main riff of Dire Straits' Single Handed Sailor (Mark Knopfler on guitar):

@paperbackwriter It is a lot of fun, and offers more versatility tone wise
with all the effects and stuff. Though it can have the downside when pickups
go bad, cause they are kinda expensive to replace, or even have general maintenance
done on them in general. Although you can get a pickup for an acoustic guitar
and give it a test drive. :)

@minstrel I know I get carried away with the overdrive, but I listen to all the
heavy stuff that uses it. Probably why I used it so much. that and for me helped
me sound less sucky than I was, cause I didn't play all that well in the first place.
I have what you might call 'Stupid Fingers'. And that is only compounded by
the fact that I have small hands to begin with, and even more ridiculous when
I tried playing bass for a bit. :p

Slipknot. I had the drums going in my head while you played. Well done!

I often warm up with Collective Soul's December or The Animals House of the Rising Sun. They're good tunes to knock the rust off my picking hand.

But my favorite riff/song to play (and sing) is probably Can't Stop by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Little Wing by Hendrix, Moby Dick by Zepplin, Bombtrack by Rage, House of Bullets by Satriani, Cliffs of Dover by Eric Johnson, and pretty much anything by Sabbath... if I had to pick up one there, it'd either be Wicked World, Into the Void, or Faeries wear Boots.

If you can play an acoustic guitar then picking up an electric shouldn't be an issue. You should try and grab a cheap one to noodle with. Especially if you're in to ZZ Top. :bigcool:

I heard another on the car radio today: Don't Fear the Reaper, by Blue Oyster Cult. I'd forgotten that one, but it sounds pretty cool.

I just learnt the intro to Eye of the Tiger a few days ago. My ear has improved . Some songs are too tough to emulate. Like "never ending story " by Limahl oh and many Queen songs are way too tough.
By the way, you guys keen to see the movie about Queen?

I don't really like hard core metal. ZZ top appeal my blues influenced taste.

    Two George Harrison ones:

    "Here Comes the Sun"
"End of the Line" when he was playing with the Traveling Wilburys.

Limelight is a fun one. And most other Rush tunes, as well. I’m almost good enough to fake The Spirit of Radio, ha.

Coheed and Cambria have a lot of good riffs in their early stuff, especially. Welcome Home and Time Consumer are particularly enjoyable.

Wish I was good enough without a pick to learn some Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler stuff. Someday I’ll be able to manage What It Is.

This is actually really fun, Bon Jovi - You Give Love A Bad Name

This was an interesting tuning/sound, and I got it from a Fender of all guitars.
    Sounds really cool.

I like/love playing songs on the guitar that aren't necessarily guitar songs
