Well, lacking context, I can see how that would be. I was describing something quite different.

 

There's something in the back left corner of your throat that runs top to bottom, and I don't know what it is, but I know it's there because it feels swollen and painful every time I swallow.

This sounds like your tonsil. I used to get tonsil infections as a kid regular as clockwork. This always turned into an ear infection, and that caused me to have to have those little tubes in my ears twice as a youth. Getting my hearing checked when I was young is a strong memory.

 

I've never understood this chart. Not what's filling in the boxes, but the boxes themselves. Where does this come from?

 

I think it's from Dungeons and Dragons, although I've never played the game myself.

I didn't either, but I did play Baldur's Gate.

Well, I got to the first fight, at which point I gave up. I liked the stealing and the quests, not the fighting.

Edit: Am now trying to decide if I'm neutral good or chaotic good.

 

I always had issues with the alignment system (my guy friends are nerds with Thursday DnD nights).

Like is it how characters view themselves, is it how other characters/players view them, or is it the absolute objective truth deep down, despite the social & individual views of their identity?

If the first, it can be wrong. If it's the second, it also could be wrong or even partially accurate.

If the last, why would you want others to know? And how do you manage consistency? Does the DM (Dungeon Master {of ceremonies}) hold players accountable & intervene if someone does something contrary to their alignment?

The boys never let Selina & I play with them, 'cause they're all serious & real players. We just want to screw around and see what nonsense we could potentially get into. . .

Some sort of mix between the shows Community and Gravity Falls renditions of DnD.

 

No idea, but... When I watched Stranger Things, I was filled with a kind of sad saudade watching the boys play D&D. That was suppose to be me. Those were supposed to be my memories. But it wasn't and they aren't. My parents were stiflingly protective. I wouldn't've been allowed to spend the night in someone's basement playing D&D, and even if I had been, by that time we lived in Hawaii where there are no basements and we lived on a military base where such colorfully youthful things were unseemly and not permitted in the regimentation of life there. I shouldn't complain. I had sun and beach and every other weekend we stayed in a cabin at Bellows AFB, which was the Air Force's "resort beach", but always with "normal" outdoorsy kids doing normal outdoorsy things. Nothing strange that couldn't be comprehended by adult minds.

 

Y'know, in the past I've had my writing be compared to that of Dan Brown and George Lucas. Sooo... with that said I will draft out a scene that I think would sound like something they would write and post here for y'all's interest and critique. :3

 

1981/2/3 D&D, 'cruiser' bicycles, bat wing t-shirts, luminous socks, knock down ginger, water bombs.

From memory a boy of about thirteen persuaded a couple of ten year olds and a sister to act as his players...in his bedroom...in the dungeon that he drew on the centre pages from a maths exercise book. Not so glamorous. And then video arrived, about '82 in the UK to watch Raiders of the Lost Arc.

 

Enormous machines with knobs, not buttons, and if your dad shelled out the bajillion dollars (that's a zillion quid to you) for one with a remote, the remote had a cable.

 

1982 was my first computer, an Atari 800. I was a GOD!!!

Anyone else heard of the new concept of the "Born Sexy Yesterday" trope?

Roughly it's the naivety & innocence of an adolescent with the body of a fully mature & sexualised woman, usually accompanied by one advanced skill set that is admired by men (generally combat).

Well I just watched Wonder Woman for the second time yesterday to celebrate Father's Day and I just started to think that actually Diana in this film seems to fit the trope model.

She definitely is portrayed as naive & innocent throughout the film—and not just to male comrade Steve Trevor, but even on Themyscira among the Amazons.

Like with Linda Carter, while her views can be seen as corny, cheesy, and romantically, optimistic—it's never portrayed as naive. If anything, she's confident in her views and it's constantly insinuated she's more knowledgable in the complex matters because of her upbringing that she hints at with a clever little smile at the camera.

Gal Godot though strong & capable, follows a one dimensional understanding of the world which on all fronts is dismissed or shown as naive. She is comedically taught the ropes of the world of men and her innocence usually serves as a heartwarming sort of punchline (the baby, the ice cream, etc).

But what I can't quite determine if her relationship with Steve Trevor is imbalanced in his favour, as seems a staple of the trope. While yes he has more social & sexual experience with heterosexual partners, I can't tell if there's actually a power imbalance between them because of this?

Anyone else ever have a book physically fall to pieces in your hands as you read it?

My copy of GoT basically disintegrated, and I'm not even a hard reader. I don't bend spines and pages. I'm pissed because now it's a pain in the ass to read it.

 

Yep! But only ones I've read and re-read.

My GoT books are really thick, so I expect the binding is weaker than usual.

 

Dude, this thing is like brand new. I'm only three hundred pages in. I've never had a book do this.
