That's markedly better than using the same response when being charged with rape.

I've been called 'eccentric.' Still not sure why, but I don't think it's good news.

My cat (Maya) used my face as a springboard when playing with one of my other cats (Woodhouse). I look like I joined fight club.

There was somebody here a year or so ago who I think ended up getting banned. They insisted that the "|" character was the way they'd a|ways written the |owercase "l", and cou|d not be persuaded that it made their writing unreadab|e.

After meeting with the writing group yesterday, I found out there is a slightly more mature
genre of YA called New Adult (NA). Suppose to go for the 18-35 range.
So has anybody else heard of this NA genre?

I've heard of it, though the person who was talking about it mentioned it as a class of books for adults who enjoy YA but don't want to be stereotyped as reading literature for kids. Personally I only pay attention to genre (science fiction, fantasy, etc.), and don't really care what age group it's intended for. If it's a good story, I'll like it. Let the marketing folks sort out what age group they want to sell it to. My own stories are for adults, though some could argue they're appropriate for teens. I let my test readers sort out the feedback on that.

It's not that I ignore the age group for my stories, but I also don't tone down the content for a story to fit an age group. "Apocalypse Springs" is like Die Hard with zombies, so I don't pay attention to feedback that says I should tone it down for a younger audience. "Cheshire Rebellion" is inherently less graphic and more kid-friendly, but still not appropriate for elementary kids. "Hurricane" is a kids' story, so it's not appropriate for there to be a lot of violence, despite the fact the story involves poachers.

I just write the story with the tone appropriate for it, and let my readers, my editor, and people familiar with marketing pin down the age group. I don't set out to write a story specifically for an age group, and I usually don't have an idea of the age group until I'm a good way into writing it. "Hurricane" got to a certain point where my main character found slaughtered animals on a beach, and it just didn't fit, so I backed up and rewrote it without the bloodshed.

    It's getting very silly.

Books should be aimed at three age groups (I'm not including toddler picture books): Children, YA and Adult.

Blessed be to God for His wonderful gift of making me hearing impaired. There's a screaming baby and his mom at Waffle House.

Thank you, God. Truest be, Thou art merciful. (Turns off hearing aid)

Are there any adult books left?

I just don't get these classifications. Sure, I read kids' books when I was a kid, but I graduated to adult (not young adult, not new adult, not almost adult) books when I was still a preteen. Back then, you had to, because all these other age groups didn't exist. When kids' books got boring, you read adult books. When my bookshelf got boring, I started raiding my dad's bookshelf. New adult? Saints preserve us!

I hear ya. I write Adult. As well I remember there just being Kids and Adult books (in all genres).
Where did all these subcategories come from?

Isn't that the target demographic for all products in all businesses? Except geriatric things, of course...

Well, as long as we're Tam Linning here, this is my favourite ...from my current favourite young female traditional fiddler ...she's good. And obviously enjoying herself!

When someone saw the potential hole in the market and exploited it.

But the New Adult market is beyond stupid. If 18-35 year olds aren't ready to move on to regular adult books, there's something wrong with them.

Actually, she always grins while she's playing. I have grown quite addicted to her. At first she seems goofy, but when you realise how good she is, it's all forgiveable. So many young female fiddlers are tempted to play the wispy ethereal Celtic Twilight persona ...she just grins. I really love it.

That was some good music, but man is she scary! She looks like she's saying, 'Just give me a couple of minutes to finish this and then.... I'M GOING TO EAT YOUR FACE AND MAKE A PAIR OF TIGHTS OUT OF YOUR SKIN!!!'

If 18-35 is a single demographic, I weep for the state of the world. To take the US as an example, 18 is when you can vote, serve in the military (17 actually), and smoke, 21 is when you can drink, 25 serve in the House of Representatives (lower house), 30 for the Senate (upper house), and 35 for president. Those are some arbitrary legal lines in one country, but that is one demographic? Also, I'm in the group who had dad give the city library his permission for me to check out anything from when I was... six or so?

I still know more about how to design and build an FTL drive than how the derailleur on my bicycle works...

Honestly, the late 30's and up crowd has way more disposable income, relatively speaking.
But yeah most companies want the young and hip crowd. :p
