    Name Help

Discussion in 'Character Development' started by C.F.W, Dec 30, 2012.

So I am in the process of planning a book. It is kind of medieval style; being loosely similar to A Game Of Thrones. The only problem is that I always get stuck on naming my characters, the Houses and places etc. So how do you think of names whether they be real/fantasy based and does anyone have any name suggestions to really help me out?

    Many thanks.

Just stick in placeholder names for now. Just make them easy to search, so you can do global search and replace when you come up with a good one.

Avoid excuses to delay actually starting the writing.

Advice I need to take as well.

However, to help generate some quick and easy fantasy names this site is fantastic. http://www.behindthename.com/random/

You can select the ethnicity of the name's background which is fun.

A word of caution (and this is a personal preference so take it with a grain of salt); nothing is more aggravating to me than ridiculous sounding fantasy names. It doesn't have to be fifteen syllables long to sound good. I'm currently reading "Homeland" by R.A. Salvatore and it's a decent story but the names are killing me. Zaknafein, Menzoberranzan, Guenhwyvar, sheesh. One guy is even named Berg'inyon. Phonetically, he is the one called wine soup.

And if he were part of a cybernetic-organic collective, would he be Borg'inyon?

I fear my fellow newbie Pundemic has inspired you.

    Well played, sir.
