Comma and quotation marks with "I mean" sentences

Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by lostinwebspace, Apr 8, 2013.

Here's my issue here. Do I use a comma and quotation marks when someone corrects themselves?

ex. "The Santa Fe is a safe car. Sorry. I mean, 'CUV.'"

It's that last part I'm trying to punctuate.

    Thanks, everyone!

can be a comma or ellipsis, instead of a period after 'sorry'...

and the comma before 'cuv' doesn't have to be there...

what is a 'cuv'?... did you mean 'suv'?... or are they called something else up canada way?

You know, I often wonder what a CUV is myself, but I've got one apparently. To me, it's a big van. :p

Anyway, thanks. So the single quotation marks (or double quotation marks) are necessary though?

i don't see that 'cuv' is really a quote within a quote there, since he never said it till now... so there wouldn't be any good reason to put it in ' '...

however, if he had said, "Sorry, I meant to say, 'CUV.'" then it would be a quote within a quote...

Every time I see this used I imagine that guy quoting with his fingers. If I am more than just annoyed at the imagined mannerism, I figure it's not correct. As I'm sure you have realized, this method is as foolproof as it is academic.

Nah, let them keep their twitching digits. I shudder to think what they might gesture with instead.
