    let's or lets

    Discussion in 'Word Mechanics' started by Mayarra, Sep 2, 2017.

    Small question here!

    So I have a moment in which a character says "lets/let's go", but my spell checker says let's is wrong and lets is weird grammar... being not very fluent in the language (yet), I have no clue. Which is correct?

    If let's go is being used to mean I think we should go or I think we should depart now, then it's let's go. Contraction of let us go. Spell-checkers aren't perfect.

    English is my first language and I still get confused. Grammar Girl does a really good job of explaining grammar in ways you can understand, with examples. I hope that helps you.

    'Lets' without the apostrophe is either the the 3rd person present tense of the verb 'to let' ("he lets me drive his car"), or the plural of 'let' ("there are a lot of student lets in this area").

    Let's = Let us go.
    Lets = releases or abandons or permits, as in :

    He lets go of his anger. = expresses or abandons
    He lets the child misbehave. = allows, permits
