I've been told I have *too many* gay characters!

Just a random thought ...Your description reminded me of a very popular book series that had just about EVERY female character "smooth her skirt" when they were nervous. Drove me nuts by the end. One character doing was fine but having all of them do it was unrealistic.

All characters being the same? That WOULD be annoying! That's why diversity is good!

There's a lengthy passage in the sixth hour of the hobbit trilogy where Bilbo has a monologue on how black fat immigrant transgender lesbian communist hobbits are opressed by the evil capitalist patriarchy.

I also noticed. Several gay people on this thread have said you shouldn't include too many. Often, the groups in question don't care.

Who boycotted the oscars for being racist? Rich, white, privileged women (for the most part).

Well, the Oscar don't have to award based on a perfect representative curve, you know "10%, 40% black, 30% Mexican" but they do seem to have a long history of favouring white straight people a little bit more than population prevalence or chance can explain. So it is kind of an issue, it's' a symbolic put-down.

I can't speak for the Hobbit films, but every time a black or brown character appeared in the Lord of the Rings movies, it was in the same places they did in the book.

Which is none, isn't it? Except the Haradrim.

Yes, the various human nationalities allied with Sauron are the only non-white humans shown in the Lord of the Rings movies.

My point wasn't that there isn't something wring about their standing at the oscars. There is. But why should rich, white, privileged women talk about it? And a lot of people were adovcating to have only black nominees, which is moronic.

And things like DiCaprio whining global warming when he could literally give billions to countering it.

    But that's off-topic, sorry.

Are the Haradrim even described as dark skinned? I saw them more as lighter skinned, even with Mumakil (or whichever of the ten names Tolkien gave to their elephants...)

I say minorities should always be glad of majorities standing up for them. Or for the privileged among that group, I'm privileged for a gay. Because otherwise you'd never get change. Black civil rights got progress when the government listened, not when they killed white people later on and looked like hypocrites.

The Haradrim are middle-eastern, so they classify as "brown."

For a man who spent 18 years developing his lore, I'll assume Tolkien went deeper than a middle-east ripoff?

Shouldn't everyone talk about it? I mean, "racism is their problem" isn't really the way I want to live my life. Racism is everyone's damn problem.

You should probably look up what "literally" means... Forbes estimates that he's worth about $250 million. Which is lovely, but... I don't see how he could literally give billions.

I think the University of Bristol will soon create a degree in trying to decipher the meaning of your posts.

Not Mandela, he never acted in anything, I don't think so. Too many posts.

Not particularly. They're pretty distinctively Ottoman/Persian combo. Culturally, aesthetically, and as an empire of middle eastern people. He wasn't making a story about being original; his fantasy races are from Celtic and Germanic lore. It's about depth of world-construction and and portrayal with an engaging story.

Millions and billions doesn't change much. He's an armchair activist.

He certainly acted out some civilian bombs.

Wonder how he fit them into bombs.

A billion is a THOUSAND millions. It changes quite a bit.

And how is he an armchair activist when he's speaking about it at the Oscars? Huge audience, ready to hear his message... so he gave it. Not in an armchair.

    Serious now...on Mandela and '63?

What could I say about that? Vastly political subject, the struggle versus apartheid, I'm on his side....think so.

    Here's one
