    Laurin Kelly's Progress Journal

Discussion in 'Progress Journals' started by Laurin Kelly, Feb 2, 2017.

I'm on my first hard deadline since joining the boards, so I figured it was a good time to start a progress journal here.

Last night I got my first set of edits back on my assassin novella Fatal Kiss. I am thrilled that my publisher has once again teamed me up with Emilia Vane, who did a fantastic job editing my first book. I have until March 1st to send back my revisions, and like the first time around it's going to be a daunting task because there are some major changes that need to happen - last time I scrapped an entire POV based on her feedback, which entailed me re-writing approximately a quarter of UTK). The big change that I need to make this time around is to greatly expand on building the relationship between the two MCs Rob and Kellan, because they go from enemies to f*ck buddies to schmoopy lovers way too fast. This story is something I wrote several years ago as much less experienced writer, so I was aware that was likely a problem going in. I may wind up with this being a novel instead of a novella by the time I'm done.

I also need to do some re-tooling of Kellan's character, because some of his behavior in the second half of the book is wildly inconsistent with how I set him up in the first part. I'm not sure how I didn't realize that earlier, especially since lack continuity in characterization is one of my major pet peeves as a reader. Apparently I need to remove the beam from my own eye before I remove the speck from someone else's, LOL. It's going to be tricky because I like how he is in both halves despite the incongruity, dammit. But it's definitely a sign of bad storytelling when your editor suddenly starts making "Why in the hell would he act like that all of the sudden? I'm so confused" notes seven chapters in. Time to kill a whole bunch of darlings I guess.

    26 days and counting!

After spending two days brainstorming and coming up with a plan on how to solve some of the larger issues in my MS, I think I finally have enough mental direction to start making changes this afternoon. I've set aside a three hour chunk of time to dedicate to it, and and hoping to get at least two full chapters completed.

I shot for two chapters today and finished 6! But chapter 7 is where it all starts to go to hell, so there's a lot more work to be done. Still, I'm thrilled with my progress today.

Got most of the way through Chapter 7 edits, adding this note in Tracked Changes for my poor editor:

I feel like right here is where things start going completely off the rails into BADFIC territory. Starting here you'll see some pretty significant changes/additions as I attempt to salvage this flaming dumpster fire of a story.

Rolling up my sleeves as I have about a week and a half to complete my first round of edits. O_O

It is the weirdest thing though. When I'm writing I can normally do a lot of the heavy lifting mentally while in the car, daydreaming during boring meetings at work, etc. But when I'm stuck (as I have been for a few days now on how to turn this disaster around), I have to be at my laptop typing words to get past it. I laid in bed for an hour this morning trying to think of how to go forward with no discernible epiphanies, but then I start typing and suddenly I've made more progress in the last 30 minutes than I have in the past few days of brainstorming.

I just completely trashed Chapter 8 and wrote the whole thing over again fron scratch. 2.5 hours and 2400 words. Hopefully I can eventually start using some of my original writing again!

With the complete re-write of Chapter 8 and a new 660 word beginning of Chapter 9, I think I may have gotten this story back on track. There's still a lot of work to do and I'm only 8 days out from my deadline, but for the first time I feel optimistic that I might not have to ask for an extension.

I have 3.5 days until my edits are due. :bigeek: I was supposed to spend most of today editing but unfortunately had to take some heavy pain meds this morning, and it took me most of the day to shake off the side effects. I'm back at it this evening though, and I think I'll know by the end of tomorrow if I'll need a few days extension from my publisher or if I can crank this puppy out in time.

I am thrilled to say that I think I've created enough time and growing closeness between Rob and Kelan that I can get them making the beasts with two backs for the first time! That's one of my favorite things to write anyway, so it should flow pretty easily.

Damn, we should co-write something - I HATE writing sex scenes!

ETA: And when I say "co-write" I pretty much mean I should write my stories exactly the way I want to and you should just write my sex scenes for me. That was clear, right?

Don't worry, I'm not much of a collaborator myself. ;) But hey, if you even need a random sex scene (as long as it's m/m, though I have written a m/m/f threesome scene that was so hot it made me blush) just give me the scenario and I can crank one out. I'm a bit of a pervert that way.

You're my new hero, but be careful what you offer.

(My most recent series is getting pretty good reviews in almost all ways EXCEPT that I did a fade-to-black for the big sex scene. If I could go back and rewrite it... I don't know if I'd change it or not. But some readers would CLEARLY prefer that I did...)

Well, let me put it this way...there were actually two sex scene that got edited out of UTK. My editor was like "OMG the banging is getting kid of gratuitous at this point." I was stunned; I'd always thought (especially as a former fanfic writer) that the more porn the better. I'm also getting rid of a few in FK because that was really a sex-o-rama.

Maybe I should hang out my shingle for other m/m romance authors who want sexy scenes but hate writing them? Laurin Kelly, Doctor of Sexification. $0.05 per word, $.10 if it's really kinky. :bigtongue:

Well, Chapter 9's being completely re-written from scratch too. I should be able to meet up with the source material in Chapter 10 though.

Got a random plot bunny today for a short story that might be a good fit for this Less Than Three anthology call. It would be my first time writing a paranormal/shapshifting/genderfluid MC, but if I'm going to break out of my comfort zone it's probably more manageable with something shorter, no?

Deadline for submissions is March 31st, so I'd better get cracking!

I have the first two parts completed and have written 3400 words in the last two days. This story is really cooking!
