I'm on my first hard deadline since joining the boards, so I figured it was a good time to start a progress journal here. Last night I got my first set of edits back on my assassin novella Fatal Kiss. I am thrilled that my publisher has once again teamed me up with Emilia Vane, who did a fantastic job editing my first book. I have until March 1st to send back my revisions, and like the first time around it's going to be a daunting task because there are some major changes that need to happen - last time I scrapped an entire POV based on her feedback, which entailed me re-writing approximately a quarter of UTK). The big change that I need to make this time around is to greatly expand on building the relationship between the two MCs Rob and Kellan, because they go from enemies to f*ck buddies to schmoopy lovers way too fast. This story is something I wrote several years ago as much less experienced writer, so I was aware that was likely a problem going in. I may wind up with this being a novel instead of a novella by the time I'm done. I also need to do some re-tooling of Kellan's character, because some of his behavior in the second half of the book is wildly inconsistent with how I set him up in the first part. I'm not sure how I didn't realize that earlier, especially since lack continuity in characterization is one of my major pet peeves as a reader. Apparently I need to remove the beam from my own eye before I remove the speck from someone else's, LOL. It's going to be tricky because I like how he is in both halves despite the incongruity, dammit. But it's definitely a sign of bad storytelling when your editor suddenly starts making "Why in the hell would he act like that all of the sudden? I'm so confused" notes seven chapters in. Time to kill a whole bunch of darlings I guess. 26 days and counting!
