    I have a law enforecementquestion,

how many years would have a police officer been required to serve as a unifromed officer until they are promoted to detective?

At least a couple years. I asked once at a police department I do contract work with, could a person start as a detective and skip the police part? They said no, you really need police skills and experience first. But I imagine a skilled cop who applied for detective might get to be one after only a few years.

I was looking at becoming a copper in the UK in the late 90's (I went to uni instead and got a corporate job). There was a 1 year fast track then, don't if it still exists.

Good point, it could differ by country.
