    Lifeline's 'Progress' Journal

Discussion in 'Progress Journals' started by Lifeline, Jun 7, 2016.

Now I am going to handle this a bit differently. This here thread is for making a list of things I have to watch out for in my writing. Things to avoid like plague, what I should steer clear of or the opposite - what I should do.

    - NOT tying more than one action to one sentence. Make it two. Or three. Except in very specific circumstances. Be very specific. Take your time. Or mine.

    - No stubs. Again, use very sparingly, and not get taken in by close POV. It is - mostly - not necessary

Feel free to add if you'd had a sample of my writing! This is a specific invitation, yes, I do mean YOU lurking and reading this!

    Another backhanded 'progress':

I think I've solved the problem of the current scene where I got stuck since yesterday evening, curtesy of my free-writing process. I will post this here for your collective delectation. This is the way my backbrain works spewing out answers to riddles which elude me :)

    *edited for outdated content*

And I just now really love free-writing! :D

Oh lovely, you have a progress journal too. I'll make sure I drop in here as well.

I cannot help you with the dialogue between guys. In any meetings I've sat in on and have had men that do not engage well, I've always been the intermediary. I don't like awkward silence in real life and I can talk enough for 3 people if need be. hehe.

    Hopefully someone can help you.

Oh but, I thought you might still want to explore the dialogue nonetheless! I thought it would be intriguing because I was thinking, I really don't know what that conversation would be like, because I AM ALWAYS THERE. hehe

It got me thinking. And also, I've been on a quest to understand the male psyche in the last few weeks. :)

    - Use the length of mini-scenes to pace my story as well. I have just discovered that this is possible (with 'mini-scenes' I mean setting changes within a scene).

Oh man, I hate trying to swap scenes/locations mid narrative. I always feel like I am forcing it.

Me too, me too. But lately I have come to appreciate it - I don't want to account for every single minute. It would make my WIP truly long to read :D

The key is finding the right latch-on *whispers*, but this can take a bit of spinning backbrain to get right.

Okay... I wanted to write you a poem on your progress journal, because as you know, I'm obsessed with rhyming and I love to write poems to all my favorite peeps. I've never written you one! This is the best I can come up with. I'm not sure what I am trying to say, but just use your imagination! hehe

It's also a thank you for the lovely imagery you sent earlier.

    For Lifey with love...

    Face the fear
    Escape afar
    Nights of peace
    Shooting star

    Exploding rock
    Love comes true
    Solidify
    the strength in you

    Measured risk
    Breaking ice
    Submerged in darkness
    Floating dice

    Sail the ship
    Learning seas
    Catching moments
    Swept by breeze

O Wow - I haven't ever been give a poem before! *whispers* y'know, I have actually spent one night on a poop deck (somewhere in the indian ocean), sitting out with a glass of whiskey and music, and counted shooting stars..
Yes, your poem speaks to me.

I suck at math. One scene a week equals about a year of work to do? Yes/No? Let's see. I don't even know how many there will be! But I suspect I will probably finish around this time next year. And this is without facturing in research (which will be/is a doozle). Oh well, I did say that I like to write??

One scene a week - I need more than that to feed my Jarrely addiction, Embrace the zen of moose and create one scene (or more) per night , sleeping is very overrated anyway :D

'Zen' of moose? Didn't you mean an 'avalance of moose'? I have taken careful note of your own progress! *whispers in a singsong voice 'Jaraley' 'Jaraley' 'Jaraley'..* :D

I am stuck in my weird mood, I can only write one particular MC at the moment. So that's what I'll do for the next time. And do lots of research :)

Looking at my last message, well it's been a times since I updated this journal. Started (almost completely) over (again), after figuring out how to to outline for the first time of my life. Complete with a spreadsheet. It worked, what can I say? ;)
Anyway, after three scenes I am at 10k. Looking forward to unleashing mayhem on the heads of my poor MCs . I am not subtle - at least one of them sees the dark clouds on the horizon. His last thoughts in the current scene ... Could anything else go wrong? Fuck.

Life(line)'s going crazy at the moment. I am still in full planner-mode, but I believe the results will be riveting - just to update all my 'fans'...

Still plotting/planning *sigh*. At least one puzzlepiece's still missing. I am beginning to recognise a pattern here - the moment I find one fix the next (previously) hidden hole demands attention. *sigh*

My realisation of the day: I am not writing scenes, I am writing chapters. Sigh. Between 3 and 5k (so far) each. That explains a lot!

chapters are made up of scenes though so you are still writing scenes just more than one at a time. The only major difference is that i generally try to split the last scene of a chapter into the next to create a 'read on'
