Maybe not, but they didn't hurt the book as a whole, quite the opposite. The names were just one piece of a puzzle that created the exotic world of middle earth, but names have to fit the world. Now if Tolkien didn't flesh out his world with the other pieces of the puzzle then the names would have detracted from the story and stood out as awkward and unnecessary.

I like to keep it sort of simple. No surnames because it is not really needed. May give them some in Book 3. Houses and all that for Halfar's world. Many of my characters are shifters who can change gender at will, so they are more flexible to work with.

I have to ask why? Why are we asked to name our characters? What the point? To massage our egos. Aren't we clever to think of such a zany, provocative, meaningful, funny, or whatever else names.

 

@cazann34, can't speak for everyone, but to me it's mildly interesting to see what kind of names others give their characters. I read this thread with a cup of tea in my hand, pinky sticking out, and in turns frown or nod approvingly.
You above such mundane objects of interest? Good for you (for what it's worth).

This is as far as the characters have gotten. I figured I'd give shortstory characters because the main novels are filled with hundreds of characters, all important. And I got quite a few unique names and what better place to find one (if looking) So I'd best keep them to myself.

It's no wonder it sounded so natural to me.

 

Not a chance. There's more than one fictional character named Princess Aurora already. Besides that, it's an obvious, relatively generic name.

 

I was joking, BTW... Dizney's deid...

 

But his Lawyahs live on. It is wise to be cautious of possible Disney trademarks, as long as you don't get paranoid about it.
