who else is writing an 80's story?

Discussion in 'Genre Discussions' started by James Hellfire, Aug 15, 2016.

It's a Love story set in the 80's, 90's, 2000's and now but it's main focus is the 1980's,

it's about an 18 year old who falls in Love with a gangster, I don't wanna give too many details away because this is the internet and people can be desperate to rip each other off, so anyway, I'll just continue on by saying that the Couple in the Story consists of two Men, one of them is 18 and the other is 19,

everything I write is for LGBT Awareness and is always a crime drama.

I'm just curious to see who else on here writes stories about the 80's and LGBT themes?

    Let's chat :)

I like contemporary times, but alternate universe, and futuristic settings. I only lived through the last 3 years of the 80's so not sure I would be much good at representing it in fiction very well. Nor do I push an agenda with characters that like the same sex. There is more to them than just their choice of sexuality, like being fun and well rounded characters.

But best of luck to you.

Sexuality is not a choice, this is another thing, my only agenda is to educate people on Human Sexuality, I myself am part of the Queer Community, I happen to be Asexual and I did not choose this orientation.

This is definitely not true. If anything, many people on the internet are desperate to have other people covet their ideas, which basically never happens.

The Eighties aren't a time period. They happened last Thursday.

(You whippersnappers wait until people start dressing the way they did in the "teens'" or whatever this period ends up getting called.)

Yeah, well, in my day, whippernsapper, the N64 was considered the biggest gaming console out there and the internet wasn't even't invented! :p

1980s, yes; LGBT or any particular theme, no. Totally depends upon the individual idea. And I'm not devoted to the time period; that just happens to be when my WIP is set.

Gaming console? In my day we were lucky to have Ms. PacMan and DonkeyKong down at the end of the dorm cafeteria. It was all the foosball table and endless games of Risk!

My WIP is set in 1967 and my next one, which is already in first draft, is set in 1985. But after seeing how difficult it is to remember the details of language use, even though I was old enough to remember, I'm almost certain I'll be changing my second novel to the present. The only advantage to leaving it in 1985 is: no cell phones.

    Still undecided.

@James Hellfire, you might consider asking one of the moderators to move this thread to the Settings or the General Writing forum. If you want to discuss the writing aspect of the topic, that is, and not watch us play around with Lounge-y side issues. :bigwink: Not that we'd avoid that over there, but . . . :bigtongue:

*waves* My story is set in the 80s and it's also a romance :). I do write LGBT themes, though not exclusively.

Hmmmm does it have to be in the 80's or can it be about the 80's like Ready Player One.

    Either way, no.

I'm starting to forget where I was going with this....

I do LGBT characters in everything to some degree, including a significant list of major happy successful M/M romances because it's always side or all about gay romance and I want that to change. And I do historical things though I don't have anything in the 80's. 50's is cold war though, so close enough? Especially given that story is one with a gay couple as main characters?
I do think you should probably avoid repeating the same kind of story over and over. LGBT themed crime drama could get repetitive. I would recommend varying genre and the amount of LGBTness between ideas but of course you should follow your vision so if that advice is too conflicting with what you're aiming for you can always disregard it. I just dislike too much formula in one contained thing, I question the importance of originality generally but the same person writing very similar books over and over can be very boring. Just a thought. (Shall you be the queer Agatha Christie though? That'd be cool. Especially if you make it more gritty and realistic)
