    Hello!

Discussion in 'New Member Introductions' started by amwm2wm3mm, Jul 30, 2012.

My name's Alyssa. I'm positively wretched at introductions and they make me sound like a socially awkward weirdo, but I'll give it a go. I'm a 21 year old who lives in New York (no, not the city). I spent the majority of my time chasing after my toddler and preparing for the arrival of our second son. I also make a habit of collecting degrees that I don't have any use for at the moment. At the moment I'm working on a Business degree and should be finished with it next summer if all goes according to plan.

I've always been a bookworm. When I was eight years old I started reading two historical fiction series, called Dear America and the Princess Diaries, and at nine I fell in love with Harry Potter. At eleven, I discovered Tamora Pierce and the amazing heroines that she made seem so real that sometimes they felt like my best friends. Even now, YA fantasy holds a very special place in my heart and it's probably my favorite genre.

I've always dreamed of writing a book but up until recently I've never found anything that grabbed me. I'd start and stop after less than five pages. Nothing seemed to work; it seemed forced and unoriginal. However, right now I'm working on a story that has just swept me away. I know it sounds corny, but it's like the story is writing itself and everything fits together so perfectly. I have extend backgrounds hashed out for all of the main characters and I'm not even certain if all of the information I have on them will come into play.

So, I thought if I was going to be serious about this, I should get in touch with serious writers, see what they're doing, and also put my work out there. Despite my love for writing, I'm quite insecure about having others read it. I often don't even like my husband reading my work.

    Welcome to Writing Forums, Alyssa!

I hope you find what you're looking for here, whatever your interests in writing.

This forum aims to provide the best workshopping resources on the internet, and to that end we have a few rules which you should familiarise yourself with before you get stuck in. The main section of the site is the Writing Workshop, where members can post their writing in order to receive critique of their work.

However, before we allow members to post their work, they must have met some basic requirments. Firstly, you must have been a member for fourteen days, and have made twenty posts on the forum overall (please note, posts in Word Games do not count towards this). This is so that members, when they post their work, have familiarised themselves with the forums and contributed to them (as well as hopefully learned something for themselves). Secondly, members must provide two constructive reviews of other people's work for each piece of their own that they wish to post. This is because we believe that the focus of workshopping should be equally upon giving reviews as receiving them, as they allow a writer to practice and improve their editing skills, which they can then apply to their own writing.

Beyond the Writing Workshop, you will find that we have extensive forums for discussion of aspects of writing, as well as a community area for general discussion. We also run periodic short story and poetry contests, which are good for challenging yourself and expanding your skills.

If you have any questions or problems, then the moderators (myself, Cogito, Lemex and Dante Dases) should be your first port of call. Any technical problems with the site itself should be directed to Daniel, the site administrator and owner. I would recommend you have a look over the rules so that you know what to expect, and what is expected. But aside from that, I hope you enjoy your time here.

That's kind of you, introspect! I'm hoping I'll feel comfortable enough to let someone read it soon. I guess one of my greatest insecurities is that the very concept of the story will sound boring and unoriginal.
It's about an 18 year old girl who has magic in a land where magic means conscription into the kingdom's army. It's about her family hiding her and her eventual discovery. She manages to escape the man who's trying to find her but she's eventually caught. The first book ends with her being sent to war. I hope for it to be a trilogy. It sounds a little boring when put in so vague terms, but that's the basics of the plot.

    hello

It sounds very interesting! that would be something that I would like to read :)

However, I doubt get how people feel the need to make there bok into trilogies??? Some people beelive that's a good thing. because some author has done it previously. i wouldnt try to fall into that trap? why not one book or a tow part book. I don;'t understand why peple feel the need to do a TRIOLOGY. It sounds like a dirty word to me :)

P.S don't be fearful over anyone else reading your writing. one persons oponion is that just as simply as that.
