    Mafia/ organised crime ideas

Discussion in 'Plot Development' started by gerbil13, Aug 27, 2017.

I'm looking for a reason why the Mafia would capture a police woman instead of killing her and how they could dispose of her without killing her.
The boss has problems killing women but can't let them go.

The story has two police women one is captured by the mafia who use her to lure her partner into a trap and capture her too. I don't just want the Mafia to execute them so what else could they do with them. Could they try to hook them on drugs or something and sell them off or trafficking them off somewhere?? Or maybe something else.
    Thanks

I've done some fairly in-depth research on La Cosa Nostra for one of my stories.

There have been Dons and others who have "misbehaved," of course, but historically, The Mafia doesn't like to kill cops because of the attention it attracts. That's why they have policies against unsanctioned murder, drug involvement, etc. That's not to say those things don't happen, because they definitely do.

If your Mob guys use one cop to lure the other, my question is why they want either cop in the first place. That may influence what the Mafia will do to them, but it pays to remember their bread and butter is extortion. "Pay us, and we'll protect you. Don't, and maybe something bad happens." The Mafia will threaten family members to get others to lay off. With the advent of the Internet, they've gotten good about digging up information on people.

As far as being unwilling to kill women but not being able to let them go, they'd probably be drugged and sold into some kind of slavery, have their reputations completely ruined so they're untrustworthy, or something along those lines. They'd be let go in a physical sense, but completely compromised so they don't keep their jobs or any credibility for anything they say. But a Mafia boss who won't kill women is rare, from what I've read, and his subordinates probably don't share his morality. Most of the guys who make good soldiers have a broken needle in their moral compass.

He's right about the mafia being reluctant to kill police officers because of the attention it attracts.
But they certainly wouldn't have any moral compunction about killing the women. I forget the names of those involved, but in the '80s Cosa Nostra killed a 13 year old boy (who was a promising jockey) and disposed of him by dissolving his body in a vat of acid. They had to keep checking back of course, giving it a stir to make sure the job was getting done properly. They're cold b*st*rds. I imagine killing a fully grown police officer would be è un gioco da ragazzi. ;)

If you are talking about the Italian mafia, they would simply invite the cop over for coffee, say what they have to say and walk away. Heck in today's Mafia, an attorney would be delivering the message.

Why in the world would they ever take such a risk when there are much easier ways to get the message across. -- the following would be considered heavy handed:

A dead pet hanging in the hallway sends a clear message

    1. we know where you live.
    2. we can get to you or your loved ones anytime we like
    3. we have no qualms about killing anything you love
    4. we can make it look like a suicide
    5. if you thought your badge was going to protect you think again.

Kidnapping is high profile. The risk, exposure, and penalties associated to this are way too great. They recognise they are under 24-hour surveillance. They also understand the playbook, of having an untenable situation on their hands. With a slew of police vehicles, SWAT, FBI, and negotiators standing outside their nightclub or cafe pending release of the police woman. They know the police is not going to just roll over and play into their demands.

Any mob boss worth their salt is going to try and use softer approaches first, bribery, escalating to putting someone you care about into a compromising situation and offering to help. Heavy handed tactics are reserved for extreme situations and something involving law enforcement, politicians, or journalists is going to need a commission ruling on it first. This would be worse than putting out a contract on a made man. So unless your Mafia boss is already at war with the government i.e executing judges and blowing up the local police station, the scenario you are proposing is not happening. At least for anyone with an inkling of how the mob works.

the closest you are going to get to kidnapping is

She walks out of a coffee shop, a limo pulls up, and she is politely invited to get in the car.
The person sitting across from her is a high powered attorney who explains to her he is representing a group of associations and foundations.
Further explaining how her investigation is of great interest to this group and how they like to lend her a hand in quickly resolving this investigation.
Handing her an envelope with the pictures and details she needs to arrest a certain group of people. --- usually some up and coming punks who think they can run an operation without the proper tributes and protection payoffs.
In exchange for her help in quietly and quickly resolving the matter, these new friends of hers have members in a sponsoring academic foundation and can talk to the dean of a university her daughter would like to attend. But only if she approves and understands this a gesture of gratitude and goodwill for her understanding and gracious help.

    if she refuses

her daughter may find herself knocked out and drugged up in some apartment somewhere with a dead body and drugs all around. The phone rings and the cop they want to influence answers, "um, I think you need to get down here now, before the local police get here, if you want to save your daughter from going to jail for a very long time. Do you have a pen and paper? here's the address ---"

now you could use the latter scenario to be the cop's partner instead of a daughter. -- how they got either one to the apartment, is basic social engineering, a new friend at a bar or social venue invites daughter to a small party, or new informant has evidence they need to share with the cop. -- no kidnapping involved, they voluntarily entered and left the premises. In mob lingo "you really should have accepted the first offer. we really dislike having to ask you for your help under these types of circumstances."

If she continues to refuse -- dead pet in the hallway -- worst case scenario pictures of her escorting daughter or partner away from the apartment end up on her Captain's desk, possibly even internal affairs. she now has a dead pet and being investigated as an accomplice to murder.

There have been several books by or about Mob guys over the years that you might look into. Sammy "The Bull" Gravano was one who turned against John Gotti and provided a great deal of information on the Gotti organization. He entered and left Witness Protection, and was later convicted. He's serving a sentence until 2019. Another infamous member was Richard "Iceman" Kuklinski, whose autobiography was written by Philip Carlo. Those are two of the more recent informants who might give you an idea of how the Mob has worked more recently.

You understand Gotti was taken down i.e. sacrificed to the FBI because he killed a boss without permission... this you won't find in the books. They had to make an example out of him, so they turned the camera's on and turned his life into a fishbowl. They took the one thing the Gambino organization was known for, away from him. A low profile anonymity. Sammy just did what he was told to do, and precisely why he really did not need witness protection.

The mob today is nothing compared to what it used to be, it's more like a semi-organized street gang than the syndicate the old families ran. What Gotti failed to realize was the mob was going legit and turning operations over to various groups. The old ways were over, Castellano was the final piece in Luciano's chess game of converting the cash into stocks, bonds, real estate you name it. The casinos were already liquidated, and the unions were being used for legitimate contracts albeit with the use of insider information. They also had plenty of front companies moving cash into wall street. The old guard got out, and their families are living like royalty off of those investments. The ones who stayed behind were involved in drugs and got too greedy for their own good. The whole thing exploded into war in the '80 because of the power vacuum they left behind.

I hadn't heard that, but it makes sense, especially since Sammy is still alive.

Perhaps they want the women to work as informants for the mafia, and they're willing to blackmail them to get it done...

    Just a thought. :supercool:

Thanks everyone for your help so far, I'll do a lot more research before starting properly. To give a bit more info on the plot, the policewomen are helping the corrupt Russian police in a investigation that involves the mafia. The setting is mostly in Russia and one of the policewomen is Scottish and the other is Hungarian, they don't really get along but are partners.

Maybe with the corrupted police help the mafia could make two interfering foreign police officers disappear?

if you want a really violent group of individuals I would suggest:

Juggemaffian --- these are the guys you call when you want to wipe out an entire family cradle to grave, they make the Russian mob look like kittens in comparison. They have also been State sponsored at various times for their abilities to get certain things done.

on the fun side of things ...

as for Hungarian-Slovak Mafia, here is an interesting little piece of recent history
BRATISLAVA Oct. 10 (AP) - Police accused cop from the Office for Combating O

Chief of Inspectorate of the Ministry of the Interior of the SR Boris Beňa said that the cop copied sensitive data to a private usb key, then to a private third-party laptop and gave the data to many unauthorized persons. "She acted against the police corps and violated the duty of confidentiality," Bena added. The investigation continues, identifies other people who could manipulate and cause leakage.
