I was reading some stuff about the Statue of Liberty the other day, to kill some time at work, and I started wondering if she had a name. I don't mean Lady Liberty, or something like that, but, like, a nickname. Like when sailors would see her on the horizon and go, "Aye, thar's me Margret again!"
But Marianne is the personification of the French nation. No one thinks of the Statue of Liberty as French.
I assume it's common knowledge she was a French gift, right? Or, the statue, anyway. Feels a bit weird talking about her being a gift. She's an international girl, though, Lady Liberty. Born in France, almost moved to Egypt, instead going to New York. Anyway, if you look at the first pic in the gallery at the wiki page, Statue Of The Republic by Leopold Morice, you have to admit she looks a little familiar. Though the torch is more like one of those shitty sparklers you give to the kids so they can feel like they're fireworksing too. Libbie! I've heard people call her Libby. That's probably what I was thinking of.
Yeah, but she’s a symbol of America. No American would look at her and think “oh there’s that French statue again.” Probably a lot of people don’t even know she was made by a Frenchman.
Hm. I expected something more... elegant. However, in a moment of utter idiocy, I forgot "Statue Of Liberty" entirely when I brought it up with a coworker this afternoon, and had to resort to "That chick from New York, with the torch!" So, yeah, Bertha will do.
I almost didn't but I realized how easy it would be to miss it. In fact I thought of Bertha Liberty and it still took me a while to realize the extra bonus level to it. Double Super Exxxtra Bonus—how a New Yorker would say it: "Da Boitha Libatee"
Can I just clarify this wasn’t how I intended the name Bertha to be interpreted. I’m not that clever.
